Step aside Cohen brother's (yes, yes... "it's all pink on the inside", I get it), the official SubFest photag's are on the scene!Who is John Galt?Comment

Stuff I got from Ray Mason. One of his pal's, Frank -- who at one time worked at the Grumman model-shop -- gave him slabs of this closed cell stuff, and Ray passed some of it off to me. Like the light-weight RenShape, but of even larger cell size. Suitable for foundations and basic structural elements.Who is John Galt?Comment

I just got back from the SUBEX24 r/c submarine regatta held at the North Lake, Submarine Base, Groton Connecticut. This two-day event was organized by Ray Mason and Joe Oliver and is one of the three out-of-State events I try to make each year.
The weather was perfect; some fine models were on display and operated very well on and under the water; and old friendships re-kindled.
A good time was had by all.
Ray Mason. Some forty years ago this guy designed, built masters and tools and produced excellent GRP kits of the Disney NAUTILUS. Here Ray hovers over two of his completed kits. The one next to him is his own, with removable squid. In foreground is another NAUTILUS, assembled and made operational by Dave 'Jake' Jacobson.
Bob Gato scratch built this simply beautiful 'tourist submarine'. Fully operational, this model alone is a master class in system integration and accessibility; stunning in device utility and simplicity -- he even employs bell type jars as watertight enclosures! He's not only a gadgeteer of the first-order, Bob's also an excellent model-builder as these pictures make abundantly clear.

It was an awesome time! The weather cooperated, nice temperature in the sun, around 75. I spent more time talking than running boats. When you get together with these guys it's like you've seen them yesterday, really good people. I'd like to see more boats running at night. Ray and I were the only ones running in the late evening (call it a night run). The water was dead flat and beautiful. Although around 8pm when I was packing up for the night we got hit with a wind/rain storm. Carol had nice walks on the base and found a road with a steep incline which was a challenge. And she loved talking to anyone. She always has a good time at these events. Wish more wives/girlfriends came along.
My only complaint.... the reason someone bought hamburgers and hot dogs and sausage was so that we didn't have to leave the base to stay for the 'night run' and only Ray and I had boats in the water after food.
And 20 of us got a tour of the USS South Dakota! Last year it was the USS Oregon. Both were the same class boats.Comment
