Nope. Even the smallest grain R.R. grass is too big for 1/96 scale. I used some on this 1/96 TRENCHANT and looks to my eyes as being a bit 'overdone'. So. No static-grass on Jake's beast.

      Does look like The Shire.

Make it simple, make strong, make it work!

Yupe. The boy's learning (only the occasional two-by-four across his nose required now to keep him on track)

Could pulverizing the grass in a blender or coffee/spice grinder make it fine enough to look right? It is definitely a cool approach.

No hula skirts. Neat technique, but gets into the silly realm along with trying to replicate oyster/mussel beds attached to Russian Black Sea Fleet subs.

Thanks Casey, here you'll notice that the paint configuration was changed from an 'operational' paint scheme to a 'commissioning' paint scheme. It has the hull numbers and name printed on the sides so is period-correct. Didn't figure 3 1/2 months of work on this one, but the corrections and re-paint were worth it. Hope to have 3 subs at Cohutta. Making the humongous box for the Type IX now. Click image for larger version

It's all we can expect during a spectacular day of doing 'ART' at the Merriman school of 'Hard Knox and Dirty Sox' where the lash and rod are never spared, and the 7-11 coffee pours like an avalanche to the weary-eyed misfits...:) Knucke-draggin' Morlocks we are!!!

What's funny about this whole painting process, is that you know 3 ways to make it happen. Merriman knows 10...but, some of the techniques he guestimates and you have to work it out. Luckily, we have a practice model to try it on. I'm used to painting and weathering large scale tanks, so I'm really getting a lot of mileage out of these painting methods and absolutely foreign mediums being used. This morning, going to work at 2am I was going over each application and it was just bizarre thinking about it. A little more to go, and hopefully, we'll have it in the water soon.

Clear coat went down an hour after you left. The film is cured already and ready when you are, pal.

A trick I use for marine growth:
Black RTV silicone tinted green with enamel paint. I use a short stipple brush to push it on. Very similar to oil painting Bob Ross style.
Don't expect paint to stick to it later but it has stayed on for years with a nice "softness" to it.

I like it! Got to give that a try.

Too bad you no longer have 1/96 torpedo launchers. Click image for larger version

How about I stick the pointy-end of a broom-stick up my ass so I can sweep the place as I shuffle out the door?

How about YOU finishing something and getting it to work credibly in the water???????
