That my fine folks is the USS New Mexico rolling out of Northrup Grumman in Newport News Va. SSN-779, my current command. The oval I believe you are talking about is the WSQ-9 Sonar array, I'm an ET Don't know what it does for us......Yet. The chin is a sonar projector and receiver. A quick side note, we were the first VA class to roll out fulling MIP'd (anechoic covered).

Sexy little boat. Looks like a French Rubis behind it or is that a French Scorpene? Speaking of the Scorpene................

A well circulated picture but I found it in a high resolution picture.

It's interesting to see all of the fasteners holding what are effectively fairings to the 212's hull. I'd imagine it makes for easier maintenance. It also strikes me that HDW is making good use of aircraft style construction techniques for these subs. No doubt the sub is wet under these panels, so they can be made with materials that have beneficial properties other than their pressure resistance.

Agreed Jim. I surmise that the majority of the outer hull is G/CRP, necessitating the mechanical fasteners. Yet there is strong evidence that electrolysis is an issue with these boats -- the external zincs.
