The picture says Collins class. But that fillet on the sail bottom reminds me of a Virginia.

I built models for a sub-contractor on the Collins job. 1/96 and 1/144 sized. At that time, late 80's (the first of the class was just started building) there was no leading edge fairing/fillet at the sail-hull meeting point.

          That fairing is a retro-fit.

I would assume that its purpose is relating to quietness underway?

ID:	61391 A nice detailed picture of a 212. I wonder what the purpose is for the two silver fins on the back slope. Maybe they are zincs. The cables that link the four X Tail fins suggests to me that perhaps they are not very robust in structure and need additional support. I say this because the Albacore and the Walrus and the Collins dont have them.

I read somewhere that those wire are there to prevent the guidance cable of wire guided torpedoes fouling the screw.

                  David,
Any chance you still got the molds for these? Maybe market a few hulls for RCing.

deployable communication buoy's. The doors, bay, wench, buoys, and such are all in the wet, no making-things-pressure-proof issues there.

Those white fin things are likely 'turbulators'. Apparently there are some boundary-layer issues concerning the water shedding off the hull and into the screw. These fins may be investigative tools or possibly a permanent fix. Don't know.

That awful four-point 'cable' around the stern control surfaces is the God-awful torpedo-guidance-wire fair lead -- it keeps the wire out of the propeller as the boat maneuvers. Yuck! I've read somewhere that the CO's of a few boats have 'accidentaly' lost this thing over the side. Tragic!

Thanks Dave and redboat219 for the info. I just noticed that the sail on the North Korean sub looks like a smaller version of a Romeo sail. Must be undisclosed Russian influence with Kim Jong Ill!

What's that oval shaped thing forward of the torpedo tube shutters?
