    Well, Sir!!

With regard to the paint scheme in question:

Whatever floats, or sinks, yer boat is all good!!
Be it "poop-brindle-brown", "yaller" er "pity-tink".......!?

Whatever it is, it looks kinda cool!!

Todays pitiful but fun progress. As you know, I purchased a piece of 2&1/2" lexan tube and have previously figured out how big and where everything is gonna go. Using a "Garage Sale" Subdriver that was too small for this boat I set about transfering everything over that I could. Using the old Subdriver as a guide I started marking it out. First I put a centerline down on top and on bottom and measured everything from there.
I needed a way to push the ballast tank bulkhead out without damaging it and to be able to reinstall it, and a way to rotate it to make the holes line up. So, I purchased a piece of 1&1/2" PVC pipe and a coupler. On the end of the coupler I cut in depressions that would allow indexing with the shape of the ballast bulkhead. Then it was a matter of cutting and drilling all the holes and openings. Perhaps the most difficult, or so I thought, was the 1/16" rod that the gas ballast arm pivots on. Its a 1/16" hole that runs at a high angle to the outside. Careful marking and drilling resulted in a nice tight precision fit. Then the slot for the ballast vent valve and the countersunk holes that hold the bulkhead in place. Finally the 1" holes for the bottom, done with a hole saw on a variable speed drill. After filing and sanding and...........etc................etc.............. ..shes pretty much done. Just need to get a longer Clippard hose and to solder up the Propel tank with its new configuration.Click image for larger version

                Greenman,
Noticed something in the first photo in the #84 post in this thread. There's a substantial gap between the hull halves right under the SD cradle. Is there a fit problem between the 2 hull halves? Is this also the reason for the resin you poured?

Impressed, i'm going to be doing similar with my garage special. That stuff looks easy, but it aint. How did you drill the holes for the vent valve control arm hinge?

                    Mark,

You're doing a fine job with your home brew SD, as for your question on that paint sceme, i think they are presenting the scum line, yellow lines only above the waterline, either on the tower, exhaust or near the bow on top.
Don't know if you glued the tower tight, but i've cutted away almost all the deck stuff underneath the exhaust and tower, less trouble with airpockets, and it will save you weight above the waterline.

Redboat, yes the hull was a little warped, everything didnt quite jam up nice like I wanted it. I would have poured epoxy down there anyway though.

Albion, using the old subdriver as a guide I stuck a drill bit in the existing hole at a right angle to the subdriver, the way you would naturally drill a hole in it yourself. I then put a mark off to the side of it on both holes, then measured the distance center to center between them. I then transfered those marks to the new subdriver, and using a 1/16" drill bit , I drilled mine. Then with the drill bit spinning in the hole I changed the angle of the drill to the subdriver, bringing it in line with the direction that the rod was going to go thru. Thus using the drill bit to cut the hole at the odd angle that you need it.

Manfred, thanks sir. However, I dont think that its representing the scum line because, If you look at it, it tapers from a wide stripe in the bow and narrows perfectly and consistantly all the way back to a point in the rear. It must be a painted stripe. RIGHT?? The other drawings of paint schemes that come with the model dont have this line painted on them. If it was a scum line then all the drawings would have it. Because the angle of the hull is changing from the front to the rear, curving over the top, its probably the same width stripe all the way back.

Hm, white striping on a sub that wants to be undetected from above, the North Sea not clear, but not trouble water enough to conceil a sub running near the surface on persocope depth, most Uboats painted their decks later darkgrey to obtain better camouflage.
Maybe it should do the trick while running on surface, kind of false wave like the Bismarck had, just to soften up the contours of the boat.

                              Manfred.

                                Well, try this:

The 23's operated in coastal waters, pretty much in areas where the axis had air superiority. Maybe the white band was an ID marking, like the white Allied 'invasion stripes' painted to the wings and fuselage of 'friendly' aircraft in order to prevent friendly fire from the air or ground. A poor man's IFF maybe?
