A sonar image of a sunken U-boat. It looks to me like a type VII. If you look on the deck forward of the conning tower you can see the four escape shafts except that they are on the wrong side , so the picture is reversed somehow.

reddevil, Ive heard both but I believe that when I was building my Revell model of this thing that the text said they were escape shafts or modules or something like that.
