That is an interesting aft end on that middle Gato/Balao - Is that a rudder standing proud?
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

I cant read the number on that middle boat but the Halfbeak had an upper rudder. Here are two picturesof her at two different points in her life. Notice also the change in sail.

Notice the corner of the Admerals pennet there flying? that picture was takin Dec 5 1947, just before Harry Truman boarded to go for a ride. That boat was sunk during early ASROC tests by the USS Robert Owens on Oct 7 1951 and is now a Fl Keys dive destination. Harry had a house aboard the Naval Station Key West where he frequently visited. Its only a few hundred yards from the pier where two 21s, 2513 and 3008 were tied up at the time. Ive seen pictures of him aboard, hanging in the Little White House Museum now a historic landmark. in the picture of the 2513 and the two us boats, they were the Cobbler SS 344 and Cubera SS 347(with the schnorkle) takin around the same time

The 209s were export boats. Probably a Type 206. (U-26/S-175, recently scrapped). Type 206s are quiet, small, and non-magnetic. Glad these guys were on our side...
