Luckey Dragon lantern. Good luck christing. Ive been trying for years to explain the oilcanning illusion in fotos of boats to no avail, but obviously that one hasent even been in the water to have any pressure. The actual fact is there are no compound bends in the steel plates when attaching them to parabolic framework of the hull. Depending on the POV and the angle of the light source seams will show up as sharp contrast points giving the uneducated eye the apperance of concaveing surface. Im not saying there is no oilcanning on subs ships or aircraft due to stress factors on the viehicle, just that your eyes play tricks

Well, having spent 2 hiches in the Navy, I can tell you No they dont wear dress uniforms all the time, only summer or tropical area of operation is whites, dress blues when in winter or temperate zones. Dress uniforms are for special ocasions. There also undress, whites as well as blues for operations underway, such as manning the rails or line handling in port. These uniforms look ok from a distance, but up close is another story. Most boat crews wear the uniform of the day which is coveralls or dungerese during normal operations. Those newer Japanese boats are immaculate inside and out, not like the IJN diesels or the P&S type boats we had in WWII

All other round-hull submarines simply plow through the water while at a high bell on the surface. Only the SKIPJAK'S 'knifed' through the water. What grace and beauty!

Yes, I love to be able to look down thru the water and see the hull of the sub below.

A Japanese sub made a port call at Pearl Harbor in the early 70's when I was stationed aboard the Tautog SSN639. I was given a tour of the ship by the XO. It was VERY clean. I was also impressed by the watertight doors. The were round and the top of the opening was much lower than ours. Unfortunately, we could not return the favor because Foreign Nationals were not permitted on US nuclear powered ships at that time.
