IDK, just felt this is a cool photo. Detailed, and not seen this one before. I think of their sacrifice, but also they look happy and loving what they do. They wouldn't want to be anywhere else. That's how I would like to go.

... wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

          Nope.

Minutes of mounting, hopeless terror... the scream of HP water impinging on gear and cutting guys to ribbons.... a bad up-angle and the boat descending well past design depth and accelerating fast.... your last milli-second of life convulsing as you instantly experience a rapid, blazing compression stroke as the bulkheads pancake forward.

          No thanks.

Call me a pussy, but I would rather dance with Cancer or something similarly pedestrian at the end of the game.

Combatant submarine duty is a game for aggressive, smart, invincible young men. Not for the old and 'wizened' guys who have had the years to look back and learned how mortal we all really are.

While I agree to a point with Dave, That last millisecond would be just that, a millisecond. Although the terror in the moments before would be real, the training would be kicking in and all you'd be thinking about is how to get the boat up and fighting the casualty. The end would be so fast that your brain wouldn't be able to process it.

When we stepped onboard those boats to take them to sea, we silently acknowledged that that underway, that dive might be our last. Call Dave a pussy, nah, wizened old man, definitely. He signed on at one time in his life just like me, and as such he has earned respect that IMHO cannot be taken away.

Unlike him, atm I miss the life, been retired almost 10 years now, and all I want to do is drive the boat one more time. As it is, I get to work on them everyday, but it's not driving.

Unfortunately, no room for a ballast tank in this beast. It'll have to be a dynamic diver. But, as these little boats had such a short freeboard, that should not be too hard to achieve.

                    David,
with regards to 1/35 scale midget subs, how much RPM does the motor output need to be? Can one use these small 6-12V N20 geared motors. Click image for larger version

The more gears are meshed, the greater the "force", but also the obvious disadvantage, the greater the resistance to gear meshing. The motor needs more current to support it.

Too slow... in that scale I'd shoot for around 3 or 4k rpms, not 1000 for sure.
