Growler sail upclose. I wonder if this is whats considered the High Atlantic sail like that found on the Requin. It looks somewhat different.

More on the Growler. I doubt anyone has ever built a working model of her. Very Distinctive.

I think the differance in the hight of the "North Atlantic sails" was basiclly because of the aplication with the hulls. The early fleet boats were converted from the old stepsails to the modern Atlantic sail to cover the new schnorkle/ perriscope configuration in the late 50s. The Guppys that were built after the war had the same mod for the schnorkle/perriscope and basic looking design for the sail , but were taller than the converted Fleets, and had a dryer weather bridge like the Growler. But what the hell do I know, I was an Airdale rate, and only rode them things once and awhile. BTW Does that boat still have the Regulus junk on the foredeck?

VonHilde, I saw it and took pictures in 2002. At that time it had a missile on the launch rails and the hanger was open and thats how you got into the boat. You couldnt go up into the sail either.

I think that type 21 is the Huge ROBBE boat kit.

I want to build one, anybody want to power it? I dont mean a Robbe kit. BIGGER! 1/24th. Perhaps a collective effort of a few people from here. I did that with a custom motorcycle a few years ago, it was a lot of fun and great comradery, and the combines efforts of all produced an award winning chopper apearing on TV and in world wide magazines. Kinda fun reading about yourselfs in Japanese, and not knowing what those little chicken scratches they put in the captions mean. Oh, and the chicks the magazines would send with the photographers wernt to shabby either. Seriously, I would like to build one in 1/24 since the opertunity of adding more minute detail, is much easier. The type II Im working on now is 1/24 and its over 6ft so the XXI would be a Monsta!! to transport. My pickup with the tailgate down might work.

I can see the Growlers stbd.tower hatch has been welded shut.

Gotland Sail. The insignia on the side of the sail is the same as they use on their aircraft. I dont know of anyone else that does that.

When I visited The Growler earlier this year, I mentioned to my wife that I saw a great resemblance of Growler's sail to HMS Scotsman after her modernisation to a Slippery S Class.

Why do people ride bicycles, when they have seen jet planes? Same reason oranges are orange and apples are red. Chop sticks, however, make a meal of a bowl of rice last longer. You can get fatter quicker with a large spoon and a pot of mashed potatoes, of course. And "if it rained soup, a fork would be rather useless", my grandfather use to say.

The royal "Roundell" is the aircraft insignia, but I think some Turkish subs had the same thing on the tower as their aircraft insignia, which is basiclly their red flag with white star and cresent and perhaps some Chinese boats as well had the flag with the yellow stars and hammer and sickle,like on some of their aircraft. Dont forget U9 with the black maltese cross, back in the day like the WWI airplanes. Of course most of the U boats in the 10th flotilla had the black cross on the tower which was the same logo on the luftwaffa aircraft. Granted it had a u boat picture in the middle, but pritty much the same.
