It's that peculiar 'hump' at the rear that breaks up the lines of the boat. Early concepts showed a flat deck, at the back, so the boat resembled a baby Vanguard. My guess is the rear deck is for storage of cruise missiles, and/or smaller underwater vehicles. Can't think what else it's there for.

Reportedly the BRAVO has that 'hump' to present a good target to homing torpedoes. Hmmmm.....

I heard a rumour that the hump on Astute was something to do with increasing control at periscope depth??!!?? Dubious. Either that or they thought if they made it really ugly, torpedoes wouldn't go near it through reasons of taste.Peter.Comment

Mark, yep diorama, apparently the scales are wrong the research sub is twice the scale of the uboat. The Delta on fire came from a Hungarian website, wonderful thing that Google chrome with it's rather good translator. Peter.P.s. I imagine you get some of your pics from some rather obscure places. I did have some real crackers of the Alrosa but do you think I can find the site again.Comment

the U boat on the bottom seems to be out of place. Ive been diving for over 50 years and have seen many wrecks in all kinds of shape on the bottom, but never saw one sitting on top of a clear sandy floor, and have that much growth on the vessel. Generally the sandy bottom is constantly shifting and would eventually cover the wreck. It looks more like a painting than a dioramaComment

My vote is diorama. The top picture from the front of the research sub Shinkai (I think) you will see a line curving to the underside of the sub. This line is for support. So models. The clarity is another oddity. I have been diving since 1976 and I have not seen clarity and amount of light like this (an exception was a fresh water dive). It does look like there is a scale difference. As a kid, in an AZ. My family would do gold panning. I brought my model from Land of the Giants (it looked like a sub) and played with it while snorkling in the shallow water (2 - 3 feet). It would look like these pictures do. That's got to be the bottom of some dude's aquarium. The sand particles are way too big to be scale...and the real giveaway is the small air bubbles that have collected on the rough surfaces of the U-boat - indicative of a oxygenated atmosphere found in an aquarium. This anomaly can also be found on rc-subs that are being trimmed in freshly filled bathtubs :)Comment
