Here’s a stripped down basic demonstration of the torpedo launch technique that I use for the tubes in the type VIIC build. The torpedo, wether it is electric or gas propelled is pushed out of the launch tube by a floating piston in the tube. The piston is moved down tube from the breach of the tube towards the muzzle end by a volume or air that will only allow this distance of travel and no further movement for the piston (after that air volume pushing the piston forward down the tube runs out, this will quickly become vacuum thus stopping the piston’s travel). When this happens the torpedo keeps traveling forwards out the tube and the piston stops.

Launch tube mechanism using only a short blast of air to make multiple stages happen in a sequence.

    End result

Nick, what a wonderful mind you have! That is a great system you have there!
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

            Tom and Steve,

            Thank you!

Did a bit more design work today. Figured out the rudder linkages and parts that I’ll need to make. Also worked out the linkage and correct rocker link ratio for the muzzle door to open and close properly with the stroke available from the pneumatic cylinder. The assembly pictured below will eventually be separated horizontally at the centerline of the torpedo tube creating a the base that can be bolted to the hull and the upper half bolted to the base. Not pictured below is a third forward mount I’ve begun designing that will support the breech end of the launch tube as well as possibly provide a mounting system for two small copper airbrush Propel storage tanks situated between the propeller shafts. One tank for the emergency gas ballast back up system and the other for the torpedo system.

I'm impressed. Can't wait to see what you'll do to the Bronco XXIII.
Make it simple, make strong, make it work!

                Thank you Romel,

The Type XXIII will be much simpler. At least I say that now…

Printed the upper half of the aft torpedo mount in a lower quality just to get an idea how it fits the boat. This is what the machine pooped out. The lower mount was printed in a higher quality. They bolt together as designed and drop right in. Will make a higher print quality upper mount tomorrow. The beginnings of the forward mount that ties the stuffing boxes together can also be seen in this photo.

Thanks Ken! It’s much easier posting the short videos on Facebook. To post them here, I need to upload them to YouTube first.

Couple more parts for the stern launch tube assembly. Hoping to get down to the shop tomorrow to machine and weld all the metal components needed to complete the launch tube and get it operational.

Some more bits and pieces added to that mess out back behind the conning tower…

Still a lot more to do but happy with today’s progress. The rudder linkage works great. Very smooth. Looking forward to making up the rest of the linkages and parts to the launch mechanism.
