Silent Service "Cold War" Veteran (The good years!) NEVER underestimate the power of a Sailor who served aboard a submarine.
USS ULYSSES S GRANT-USS SHARK-USS NAUTILUS-USS KEY WEST-USS BLUEBACK-USS PATRICK HENRY-K432-U25-SSRN SEAVIEW-PROTEUS-NAUTILUS
Yup. If protocols are in effect and sure they are, the boats name that made the historic sinking will be classified at least for as long as the boats still on
patrol in a war zone or the entire patrol. Also have to protect the families of the crew back at home. Modelers all over the world with rc subs will now have a obligatory USS __________ ???? at their regattas.
Early Mk 14 NOT! lol.
The video is impressive, but same as it would be against a old target too.

Ed, that just makes it easier for us to kill their ships in one place. If it were me, I wouldn't even go to the pier for quarters 'cos I'd have that niggling feeling in the back of the brainpan that someone/something was watching me.
For the crew, this was the tactical equivalent of kicking a puppy. Those martyred never knew what hit them. Note in the videos, it appears the ship appears to be in flames prior to the torpedo's detonation. I mentioned this online yesterday, and a naval commentator picked up on it. There may be more to this story.
Possibly the initial attack on the ship was from an aircraft. To paraphrase submarine enthusiasts, "The best way to sink a ship is not to let air out the top but to let water in the bottom".
Very good point Mr. Clarke. I saw the fire too, but it didn't register till you mentioned it. Also, the ship was sunk south of Sri Lanka, quite a distance from Iran.
If as a layman I had to guess, like HMS Conqueror and the Cruiser Gen Belgrano in the 1982 Falkland's war, USN Sub 'X' had been tracking the target for some time prior to attacking the Navy monitoring all naval assets in Iran has or had. That's what subs do well. I read the Iranian ship had been earlier in a naval training exercise with the Indian Navy? WTF. What was the Iranian Navy practicing with the Indian Navy? More questions.
The fire seen is blazing you point out so well prior to the ADCAP hit is in the ships helicopter hangar area. Was the helicopter with any homing torpedoes taken out first as a tactic to prevent independent retaliation on the sub? Was a Harpoon fired first initially?
Like you said, there may be a lot more to story here we in the public don't have privy too yet.
Reuters:
The website of the 'Milan' biennial multilateral naval exercise organised by India listed the 'IRINS Dena' as having taken part in the drill, which was held in the Bay of Bengal off India's eastern coast.
IRIS - or Islamic Republic of Iran Ship - is the more commonly used prefix for Iranian naval vessels, while IRINS - or Islamic Republic of Iran Naval Ship - is sometimes used.
“Indian Navy welcomes IRIS Dena, of the Iranian Navy, on her arrival at #Visakhapatnam ... reflecting long-standing cultural links between the two nations,” the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy said in a post on X on February 17 along with pictures of the warship and some of its officers.
An Indian Navy spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment after the Dena was sunk.
That 'fire' might be a heat artifact from the type of band and/or sensitivity of the sensor in use -- infrared or low light. The Glow might be coming from the smoke-stack. Just spit-ball'n, I don't know for sure.

I had the same impression. Thermal signature of the engineering space as seen in this photo.
( not actual IRINS Dena, but for reference only)
