    Yankee project 667A
There were 34 units made from 1968 onwards. They were the first soviet subs to have comparable firepower to American ballistic missile subs. They were armed with 16 missile tubes loaded with SS-N-6 Serb missiles. It required 27 minutes to launch all 16 missiles but they could do it on the move and as deep as 165 ft. The very front tip end of the sail had a hatch that opened and allowed a telescoping satelite antenna to be deployed called by NATO as "Cod Eye". Maximum speed submerged was 27 knots and they were armed with a unusual mix of torpedo tube sizes. It had 4 533mm(21") and 2 400mm(15.75") torpedo tubes. One boat, K-219 suffered an explosion and fire that killed four men when liquid rocket fuel leaked into the boat with bad results.
Yankee II project 667AM was a one boat series that replaced the liquid fueled missiles with solid fueled SS-N-17 missiles but it was not repeated. All boats were powered by twin PWR reactors and twin shafts.Click image for larger version

I wonder what those dodads are on the sides of the sail. Looks like marker lights.

        Delta I project 667B Murena(EEL)
There were 18 boats of this designation. They carried 12 tubes for there missiles. The range of the missiles was sufficient enough that they no longer had to venture out into waters that the SOSUS sonar net covered but they could remain in the Barents, Norwegion and Artic seas and still reach their targets. Their power came from 2 PWR reactors and Two shafts. They were 465 ft. long and could reach 25 knots submerged. All had been s****ped by 2005

        Delta II project 667BD Murena-M
There were 4 boats of this designation. They added four more missile tubes than the Delta I to bring the total to 16 vertical tubes. The length as a consequence grew to 508 ft. Those tubes carried the SS-N-8 Sawfly, the same as the Delta I. To quiet them the propullsion machinery was mounted on Shock absorbers and hydraulic lines were isolated from the hull. They had 4 533mm torpedo tubes and two 400mm tubes as well. Max submerged speed: 24 knots All Delta IIs were out of service by 1996.

          Delta III project 667BDR Kalmar(Squid)

This version was the first with Missiles that had multiple warheads. They were the SS-N-18 Stingray. It was also the first Delta that could launch any number of missiles at the same time. In class there were constructed 14 boats. They had 4 533mm torpedo tubes and no 400mm tubes. They are 544 ft. long with Two PWR reactors and two shafts. There is some conflicting information but the Delta III is said to have 5 bladed shrouded props. 24 knots is their submerged maximum.

          Delta IV project 667BDRM( Delfin)

This version has seen 7 boats in all and they are all in service and most of them have been rebuilt. This is because of the high cost of operating the Typhoon class submarines. Therefore as of 2008 the force strength of the Russian navys Ballistic missile forces stood at (1) Typhoon, (6) Delta IIIs, (6) Delta IVs. The Delta IVs propulsion equipment is mounted on a isolation raft to further quiet these submarines. In a step backward the Delta IVs missiles are the newer SS-N-23 (skiff) missiles that have reverted to liquid fuel. They are a three stage type that has a range of 8300 km. Delta IV K-64 has been converted to special forces use.Click image for larger version

Each of these drawings is in descending scale as you can see. All Deltas have the same beam. The Delta I is 456 ft. long and the Delta IV is unknown but is believed to be longer than the Delta III which is 544 ft. The Delta I has 12 tubes so it is the shortest of the group.

With 16 tubes it is visibly longer than the Delta I.

A subject of some contradiction with these drawings is that Delta III is reported to have the same shaped rudder as Delta IV, not what is shown here.

Delta IVs nose is more rounded than the previous types. Also note the generous space beneath the missile superstructure that runs the length of it. The other types do not show this.Click image for larger version

                  Typhoon Project 941(akula) Shark
Leonid Brezhnev warned the American president in a conversation over the arms race that if he didnt curtail his building plans for the future that he would have no choice but to go ahead with a fantastic project. True to his word there soon appeared a huge submarine that NATO branded "Typhoon". There would eventually be six of these 33,800 ton monsters. Once again it was designed to fire their ballistic missiles from their hiding places in the ice fields. As it turns out the range of their missiles is great enough that they could fire them right from the docks. Those missiles are the SS-N-20 with up to 10 warheads each. There are 16 missile tubes in all, for the ballistics. As far as torpedo launched weapons they have four 533 mm tubes for torpedos as well as the SS-N-15 cruise missiles. Also there are two 650mm tubes for the type 65 torpedo as well as SS-N-16 cruise missiles and mines. It is constructed with 2 Delta pressure hulls situated side by side. There are five separate pressure hulls in each Typhoon for added safety and survivability. Two are on active duty until 2019. It has been reported that a Typhoon can routinely break thru 12 ft. of ice. Pictures to follow.http://www.educatedearth.net/video.php?id=2699 A short documentary while you wait.

                            Hey Mark,

Just in case you thought no one was paying close attention - the second shot in this sequence is an OSCAR II, not a TYPHOON.
