Apparently that picture doesnt belong in that group, as Akulas are not listed as having those auxillary props inboard of the seven bladed prop. Good catch. Here is a drawing of the SS-N-21 Sampson(tomahawkskii) cruise missile that is fired from the Torp tubes on the Akula.

Now we come to the Project 885 Yasen/Graney(Ash Tree) or the Severodvinsk. It is a fourth generation attack sub. It is slated to replace both the Oscar and the Akula as a multimission platform. The project began on Dec. 21st 1993. Numerous delays due to lack of funding as well as technical delays caused the construction to remain idle for years. Recently it began again in earnest and is in the water undergoing trials. A second one was laid down and it is known as the Kazan. The first hull is known as K-329. It is larger than the Akula and will be loaded with as many as 32 Cruise Missiles. Because it is multi-mission it has eight dedicated cruise missile silos behind the sail. Because it has a large spherical sonar the torpedo tubes are set back and angled out.It has ten torpedo tubes made up of the 533mm(21") and the 650mm(25.5") It is designed around one PWR powerplant and produces at the prop 43,000 SHP. It is said to be capable of 35 knots and a never to exceed depth of 1804 feet.Click image for larger version

Notice the prominant bulges outboard of the sail on both sides. A Mystery.

Oscar I(granit), there were only two and they have lived out their lives and have been s****ped. They were the Project 949.
Oscar II(Antei) project 949A , there were eleven built. Let us have a moment of silence for the "Kursk" lost on 8-12-2000.............................................. ...........................
Referred to as "Mongo" by U.S. patrol crews because of their size they, like other Russian designs, had a enclosed bridge in case of inclement weather. They have one large escape pod at the location of the large bump on top of the sail. It is constructed of steel for both hulls and the inner hull is divided into ten compartments. Power comes from two PWR reactors and two 98,000 SHP Turbines. It contains 24 paired missile tubes containing P-700 "Granit" missiles. The boats recieve targeting info from satelite and aircraft transmissions. The missiles could be fired one at a time or in rapid fire salvos to overwhelm defences. They also fire their cruise missiles from their 650mm torpedo tubes. Major firepower to contend with. OK, time for me to wake some of you arm-chair Admirals up to the realities of what these submarines are all about.

The Russian and American SSGN and SSBN's are designed to kill American's and Russian's. That's WHAT THEY DO!

I'm glad the Kursk sank. I wish all weapons aimed at our (American) throats, along with their crews, wreaked and dead!

Those of you spouting that romantic, foolish, and dangerous, "We're all Sailor's on the sea", horse-**** -- what will you be saying once over 5,000 plus American sailor's, members of a carrier battle group, are vaporized by one of those OSCAR class submarines?

I love the looks and mechanics of the Russian submarines and very much enjoy the pictures.

I hate what these Russian submarines are prepared to do.

                    AND SO SHOULD YOU!

                    David,

I agree. I dont like SSBN's because of what they represent. I cant get over the disgustingly ugly job of an Ohio, or a Typhoon. Regardless of how much I ***** about waiting in line at the store and how nice it would be with less people!

Oscar is OK, sink the carriers. They are combatants and thats fair game if your a "warrior"

Agreed. David's words aren't PC - but they are 100% on the mark.
Conscripts or not these ****ers are trained with one mission in mind -to kill the Americans and their allies - and by so doing so destabilse democracy and freedom loving peoples everwhere. Same goes for the Dear ****head Leader's regime in North Korea right now.

If you think David's words or my agreement is harsh - remember the Russian response.
                            -First to blame the west
-Second to leave the crew for dead - SOP for any nation that doesn't consider human life valuble. They have such contempt for their own -there trained from the high command down that way. What contempt will they show us.
-Third to perpuate failed technology -in this case Hydrogen Proxide powered torpedoes - Read First and Second.

A bit heated I know but I am a simple guy to figure- I hate Communism, Socialism, and Terrorism.
I love God, Freedom, and Family - too easy!

As for the details of the class of sub, the two lower rudder photo is of interest - I have often seen skematics showing just the one.

It is my hope that my comments did not confuse anyone. I am not Russian nor do I ascribe to the Russian way of life. I like gadgets and that includes guns. However, at the same time, Im not happy about the fact that they are many times abused. The same goes for submarines. It is not my intent to ruffle any feathers here but this is my viewpoint. We all admire Dave Merriman. However, If he had been born in Moscow Russia , his Mother and Father and all his school mates and friends would have been there. When he enlisted in the Navy, where would he have served? Aboard an Akula or an Oscar. And thats not his fault, he would have been a victim of circumstance. And the same goes for anyone of us whether American , British , German or whatever. The men and boys that died on the Kursk, most of them did not want to kill Americans, they just wanted to go home to their wives or sweethearts. I dont want to get into any political discussions or debates as they are too dividing.
