Echo I Project 659. There were five of them. They had six cruise missile silos that were erectable and that fired the older Shaddock SS-N-3c missile that was designed to attack land targets as this version of the sub had no way to guide the missiles on there way. It is clear to see that the Echo was a continuation of the Julliet design.
Echo II project 675 was an improvment. Twenty nine Echo IIs were built. They had the sail mounted missile guidance radar as did the Juliett. The Echo II carried eight missile tubes by extending the subs length by 5 meters. 20 mins. were required to launch all eight missiles and the sub had to remain on the surface the entire time the missiles were in flight in order to guide them to the target causing the sub to be extremely vulnerable to attack.

This picture is from a whole series of pictures taken from a ASW ship trailing continuously an Echo that was getting too close to a CBG and not taking the hint. Apparently the Soviet commander became enraged and maneuvered his sub with reckless abandon to try to end the pursuit but to no avail.

The last one in this group is the PAPA. Project 661 Designed from the outset as a sub to explore new technologies , it was all new. It still holds the world verified speed record for military submarines at 44.7 Knots.She was the worlds first Titanium hull submarine. In fact both inner and outer hulls were. She mounted ten cruise missile tubes forward of the sail to launch the SS-N-7 starbright cruise missiles, the same as the Charlie. The tubes themselves were angled upward at 32.5 degrees. Her speed however caused there own problems. Damage to hull fixtures as well as excessive noise. She was so expensive to build that she was called the Golden Fish.

Notice the uneven height rudder, a dead giveaway.

The face of the sail bulges right at the top. No tiles on this sub. It looks very clean and smooth.

Hotel Project 658
The first one, K-19 was put into service in 1959. A total of eight would be built. It was basically a November with a different bow and a "Golf" missile compartment. It sported three SS-N-4 Sark missiles in tubes right behind the sail instead of in it. The sub had to surface in order to launch missiles and it took twelve minutes to launch them. The K-19 had so many accidents that it was referred to as Hiroshima by the Russian navy. Its reactor system was the same as was used by the Echo as well as the November, hence the abreviation H.E.N. for Hotel, Echo, November. It was powered by two PWR reactors turning two shafts. Maximum submerged speed was 26 knots. All have been s****ped. There arn't very many good pictures out there of the Hotel but Ill post what ive got.
One of them, K-145 was modified as a Hotel III and as a consequence she was lengthened to 130 meters and recieved six tubes to house the larger R-29 missiles, hence the bulged area behind the sail on this unit that you dont see in the other pictures.

Thanks Joel. I like Russian submarines because of their diversity, something to learn and get straight in my mind. From a safety standpoint Id rather ride in anybody elses. After this Russian segment is done I was thinking about doing something similar with other nations subs. That is if I dont get banned.........LOL!
