Italian sub from WW2. Dont have a ID. It has been said that the Italians had the largest sub force in the world during WW2. But they didnt know what to do with them.
IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!
They were very short of fuel and supplies. But what they were more shorter was qualified high command chiefs to prepare good operational planns and to give commanders appropiate operational orders. They were always tied up with addendas to their orders such us "avoid combat if enemy has superior forces or if there's any risk to your ship", and so on. Wait a minute. Risk of loosing my ship? Sir, I'm going to engage with a fellow whose task is giving me hell. What am I supposed to do?
A very sad situation a lot of RN officers realized about after italian surrender.
Looks like the Calvi Class of which there were 3 boats, Pietro Calvi, Enrico Tazzoli and Giuseppe Finzi. All 3 took part in the Spanish Civil War. During WWII all 3 were posted to Bordeaux. Tazzolli had the best record sinking 19 merchant ships totlling 96,533 grt in eight patrols.
I have a book, Submarines of World War Two by Erminio Bagnasco. It lists all the subs including pictures and sketches of every type for all the countries During the war. It lists who and when built and all the specs of every type! I found it by accident in New Zealand and is the most informative book I own on the Subject!!
The book has pictures and sketches of all 28 classes of Italian subs plus the 2 classes of foreign Subs they used. They also had several types of midget and special craft.
If you don't have a copy, i suggest you try and locate one.
