Red depth to keel numbers arn't to be found on the Z, but there are lots of varients in several navys and the only one Ive found of the Barbel/Zwaardivs/Chien Lung class is the Walrus. Just a thoughtClick image for larger version

The aft part of the sail seems unique to the Dutch Navy. Walrus, aye.

Oh, thats the Seawolf with a shortlived, experimental sensor. Perhaps an early American version of the Russian SOKS system. They called it an "Hall Effect" ELF sensor.

Thanks chaps, I was hoping it was a ramming device. The Seawolf would ram an enemy ship or sub, pierce the hull and the big balloon thing on the end would open up and the word bang would be written on the end.

You were Hoping........yeah, I know you. Ha! Your funny sir! I was thinking it reminds me of a Giant rectal thermometer. Maybe the Naval research boys wanted to take the temperature of a Sperm Whale or a Giant Squid........(pause for effect)...... It could happen.

Its basiclly a a MAD boom. Magnetic anomaly detector. ELF is the correct nomanclature, but its the same thing on the P3s and S3 aircraft as well as others. It was an experiment in 1963. There were a few operational glitches and was dropped. The fiberglass unit was subject to bad weather dammage and close quarter manuvering. Evidently, they broke it a couple times. They should have made it retractable like on the S2 and S3 which are carrier based aircraft and had to be retracted to clear the deck when at a hi angle of attack, during landings. On the other hand it could be a giant Q tip to clean out other subs torpedo tubes. That would have been the original Navy cover story back then.
