Observe. In this blowup, what are the canister looking things on the sloping part of the outer hull?

          Sound-survey rig?

Used to identify and analyze self-noise sources.

Absolutely! Give that man a Teddy bear! The first three pictures are of a delta named Novomoskovsk. It is described as "udochka" which literally means (fishing rod). It calibrates sonar based on bearing angle. The fourth picture is taken from the stern area of a Borei. The fifth picture is of one of the new Garaney class boats and the last one is back to the novomoskovsk.

This is the Marlin. Ive zoomed in on a small door on the bow. Looks too small to be a torp tube and this is a research sub. So, what is it?

Torpedo tube shutter-door (or fairing to keep the birds out). The two T-boats had a single tube for launching 'targets' and Mk 37's. Both of which were 'swim-out' launched fish. I don't remember if the tube was rigged for pneumatic ejection. I was on board one once and I think it had the same MK33 tube we had in theTRUTTA's bow and stern nests.

we called those boats the M&Ms, when I was going thru the Advanced Underwater Swimmers School, in 1962, here in Key West. We used the Marlin and Mackrael in the course of some of our training, back then. They were also used for training by the Fleet Sonar school as well. The first sub I ever saw out of the water was one of the two, but I cant remember which one.Click image for larger version

I can't find any boats with a number as high as 29, and by the look of the tower, it could be H29
