And lets not forget those who fought them in submarines. My dad was depth charged twice and strafed by aircraft as they sank sixteen Jab ships with their 3" gun. HMS Sibyl patrolled the Malacca Straights and ended up being the first submarine to arrive in Singapore harbour for the Relief of Singapore. My dad saw the deplorable conditions of the British and Australian prisoners held in the infamous Changhi jail. Dad hated the Japs until the day he died. "*******s!" he called them.

But I've said all this before!

Somewhere I read that four shafts were vertical storage mine tubes.

Vertical mine dispensers. They also had them on the tower, and some on the after deck.

Towed array elements or SOSUS cable splices and an amplifier.

The caption that went with the picture said, just as you guessed David, towed array pieces and parts.

Don't know about the antenna. But, see the accommodation ladder. Some idiot had to rig that thing with all the white crap on deck. I would not want to be anywhere near and under those big ice-cubes, just waiting to slide off that turtle-back!
