You know you’re way down the rabbit hole when the hardware store says your 6’ stock tank just came in!

Step 1 completed: 6’ x 2’ x 2’ testing tank. The bobsled ride down the basement stairs was a thrill. I am very excited about having this essential tool!
Step 2 build a 2x4 frame and raise it up 24”
Step 3 have the plumber add a faucet and drain (not ad bad as it sounds LOL).
Hmmm…..maybe a requirement for RC subs is you must be slightly demented LOL - I’m having fun!

              Hi Jörg -
It is an extremely durable poly(ethylene) tank. Lighter weight and no rust issues - cost $219. The product is:
              Behlen Country 2 ft. x 2 ft. x 6 ft. Poly Stock Tank, 52112027GT
I’m pleased with it. I was able to get it locally - shipping tanks will double the price.

Is there a general rule to follow regarding how big your test tanks needs to be? Obviously depends on the size of your model but how much allowance around and how deep?
Make it simple, make strong, make it work!

Speaking only for myself, I chose the 6’ x 2’ x 2’ size because my preferred scale is 1/72. This tank offers all the room needed to test any 1/72 sub I plan to build. My South Dakota (wip) is 61” and the USS Nautilus 571 coming next is 54”. Plenty of room fore and aft, port and starboard. Other modeler’s needs might be quite different.

I'm sure it's totally dependent upon the size of models you build but the 6' also works good for me like the photo above. I like the straight sides of the aluminum tanks like in the link below and they are normally in stock at TS. The other good thing at TS as they often have discount coupons and sales, I got mine last year on sale for $180.

It's a heavy rabbit hole, too! My standard galvanized steel tank (2x2x6) holds 189 US gallons of water. That's 1,512 lbs!!
