AND NOW FOR THE PIZZA_DE RESISTANCE!!!..............or something like that. The "A" class.

The only new class of submarine by the British during WW2. It was designed for use in the Pacific, therefore it had full hull welding and working AC. They also equipped it with an early form of aircraft warning radar that functioned even when submerged. All were fitted with SNORT. There were several of these boats that its SNORT failed contributing to the loss of the boat. One of these was HMS Affray! The Snort tube broke off. The Admiralty stated that the real cause for the loss of the boat was a battery explosion. Only Amphion and Astute were delivered before the end of hostility's.
In operation they initially were considered unstable. After the addition of a extra buoyancy tank in the bow the were declared much improved. Sixteen were built and the rest were canceled.During post war testing HMS Alliance commenced a SNORT cruise that lasted thirty (30) days before she finally surfaced. In Feb. 1948 HMS Ambush did the same thing but for six (6) weeks. 281 ft. 8" long. 22 ft. 8" beam, 18.5 Knots surfaced, 8 knots submerged. ten(10) 21" torpedo tubes(6 bow(2 external), 4 stern (2 external), One(1) 4" gun. Keep in mind that some of these pictures are after post war modifications..Click image for larger version

In the forth picture down you can readily see one of the differences between the A class on the left and the T class on the right. Look at the ballast tank profile. The A class tanks are almost flat on the top near the superstructure and jut out farther.

Ok , thats all the WW2 stuff. Now lets get into the more modern stuff. After the war these are the boats that came next, in order:

Porpoise class (not to be confused with the Porpoise class used during WW2)
            Explorer class (Hydrogen Peroxide powered)
            Oberon class
            Dreadnaught class
            Valiant class
            Resolution class (ICBM)
            Churchill class
            Swiftsure class
            Trafalgar class
            Upholder class
            Vanguard class (ICBM)
            Astute class

              Porpoise class
You would think that with all the names in the English language the British could have come up with a different name for this class other than one that was used in WW2. These boats were capable of high underwater speeds and deeper depths than previous. They were also very quiet. Eight of these boats were built. They featured an air and surface radar that could be used at periscope depth. Also, they came equipped with an advanced SNORT that allowed maximum battery charge continuously in heavy seas. Effective Air conditioning and oxygen replenishers and hydrogen and CO2 eliminators were installed to maximize operations. A great deal of attention was payed to plenty of storage space for extra stores to extend cruises. The distillation of good quantities of fresh water from seawater was finally realized with this class of boat. HMS Sealion was the last one operational and was decomisioned in Dec. 18th 1987. Dimensions were 295 ft. 3" long, 26 ft. 6" beam, 12 knots surfaced with 17 knots submerged, eight(8) 21" Torpedo tubes with six(6) upfront and two(2) astern.Click image for larger version

                      Explorer class
The explorer along with her sister Excaliber were designed as experimental submarines. To determine if HTP( Hydrogen peroxide) would be suitable for use as fuel for propulsion. Diesel fuel was burned in an atmosphere of steam and oxygen(from HTP) from within a specially designed Turbine engine. After several explosions of various magnatudes they picked up the nicknames "Exploder and Excruciator" respectively. The HTP was contained in special plastic tanks outside the pressure hull. At times flames could be seen burning above the cylinder heads. For this reason the engine rooms were unmanned during operation. So cramped were the hulls that all crewmen were accomadated aboard acompanying support ships. No armaments were installed as they were for experimentation only. After nuclear power was introduced they quickly fell into disuse. At one time they were thought to be the fastest subs in the world. They were also equipped with diesel engines and electric motors so that they could operate in the traditional way without HTP. 225 ft. 6.5" long, 15ft 7 and 1/2" beam, 15 knots surfaced and 25+ knots submerged. So unstable was the HTP that it would explode without warning and of unknown causes.Click image for larger version

                        Oberon class
Almost identical to the Porpoise class except for internal systems. They had improved detection systems and could fire homing torpedos. Plastic was used for the first time in Royal Navy subs and glass fibre was used on the sail and superstructure. HMS Orpheus used alluminum. HMS Otter used steel as it was to be used as a target boat. Two(2) HMS Odins were built. One was transfered to the Canadians so another one was built.
A total of three(3) Oberons were sent to the Canadians and served well until replaced by four(4) Upholders. Tha Austrailian navy bought six(6), although they are now being replaced by Collins class boats they have been continuously upgraded and can fire the Harpoon missile.
In 1970 trials were held in the mediteranian for escape submarine training. A world record was set for escaping a submerged and moving submarine. It was HMS Osiris and she was at 600 ft.
In 1982 HMS Onyx was deployed to the Falklands and was Britains only diesel sub in that action. Thirteen were built for the RN. 295 ft. 3" long, 26 ft. 6" beam , 12 knots surfaced and 17 knots submerged, eight(8) 21" torpedo tubes. After carefully examining the Oberon and the Porpoise the only difference that I can see is that the Oberons seem to have a purpose built shelf on both sides of the sail for walking around it at its base. I have seen that shelf on only one Porpoise so it must have been a retrofit.. .Click image for larger version
