Rant starts now: There are many people collecting good submarine pictures from around the world and posting them on "Flikr" and other sites and disabling download. So you can see the picture but you cant save it. THATS CRIMINAL in my opinion! He was allowed to download the pictures for his collection but hes going to block you from having them to share. MORON(spelling)!!! The only way that the internet can be a information super highway is if everyone who seeks an answer to a question is also quite willing to give one! If a person seeks a picture then he needs to be willing to share one. If not then you are a GREEDY#@%^$*&^****!!!, of the worst kind. Ive even had a well known submarine model builder offer me hundreds of rare Russian pictures from his collection. He would provide me with them only if I promised not to post them on Mr. So and Sos website. Needless to say I turned him down flat! THE NERVE!!!!!.............rant over. In order to get around their subterfuge I have resorted to saving screen shots of the pirated pictures in order to share them with you. Not as good as one without the borders but you'll still be able to see it and hopefully benefit. So if you see some in my stuff youll know why.Last edited by greenman407; 08-12-2011, 04:34 PM.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment

For the record:
I was one of the guy's who got his alabaster white ass on an airplane out of Russia and back to the States after he wore out his welcome at the Worker's Paradise a few years back.
Fry was there chumming it up with his Russian 'buddies' getting those pictures (and rare and choice stuff it indeed is!) for his book, and in so doing spent his last rubbles. That's when he found those guys to be 'friendly' and cooperative only as long as their young, impressionable, and very gullible Yankee visitor was able to pick up the drinking tabs.
Maybe Wayne's holding on to a grudge because Mike and I sued his ass while he was VP of the SC?
Guy's got a very short and selective memory. Hold back on pictures ... FROM ME!!!!????
F 'em.
Post away, Mark!

That's OK, I needed to vent anyway.
Who was it? I want names! I want bodies in the street! ... bodies burned black... bodies dismembered and full of worms!...

On to the business at hand:
Dreadnought,
Only one submarine of this class was planned for and completed. It was Britain's first Nuclear powered submarine. In 1958 the decision was made to purchase a reactor from the US to power this boat as the British design had fallen behind schedule. This very same reactor was used in the Skipjack.
In 1971 she surfaced thru the Ice at the North pole. In 1980 she was modified to carry the Harpoon missile.
Her only act of firing in anger was actually humanitarian also because she was called on to sink the "Essenburger Chemist", a tanker that was on fire and was drifting out of control. She was laid up in 1982. Of interest, in some of her photograph's you will note that in some of them she is S80 and in others as S101. She was the victim of a renumbering exercise. It was concluded that from henceforth all post war diesel boats would be 1-99 range and all nuclear powered boats would be 101 onward. 265 ft. long, 32 ft. 3" beam, 25 knots surfaced and 30 knots submerged, 15,000 SHP., Six(6) 21" torpedo tubes.Last edited by greenman407; 08-13-2011, 03:23 PM.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment

Valiant
The first all British Nuclear Submarine. HMA Valiant was completed in July of 1966 at a cost of 24.9 Million Pounds. It was later discovered that the welding techniques used on it and Skipjack class submarines were causing hairline cracks to develop. They had to be periodically drydocked for welding repairs. The problem was traced to improper preheat of the parent metal and type of electrodes used. The solution in part was to develop "Low Hydrogen" electrodes which I can tell you are pretty standard fare today.
In April of 1967 , Valiant undertook a 28 day 12,000 Nautical Mile submerged passage from Singapore to the UK which set a new world record. In 1980 they were upgraded to use the Harpoon missile.
Onlt two were built, Valiant and Warspite.
One thing that you will notice from the pictures is that starting with Dreadnaught and ending with Astute, all the bows on these submarines are practically identical in shape. Thats why at times it can be challenging to ID them. Take note Here is a video of HMS Warspite on patrol in the Falklands. A very good view of her exterior during cruising and diving and good internals as well.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF0zc...related&fmt=18.Last edited by greenman407; 09-10-2011, 10:00 AM.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment
