What broke on your printer? Is it not worth repairing it? As you know they’re great printers. I’m using the 3D45 model.

Not sure what cause it, but the entire extruder, hot head, and the main board are cooked! It also took out the main PCBA touch screen! There was smoke from the extruder area! Just glad I was here to catch it!! This is an 8 year old printer, with thousands of hours on it. I estimated the parts would be approximately $500.00 for those that I know are gone! If it where a newer printer I might spend the money and try to make the repairs!

Not really sure of all the damage! When I first plugged it back in and powered it I got smoke around the extruder, and no light on at the PCAB touch screen! I took it all apart and found the extruder board cooked and the wiring to the auto leveler was burned. When i pulled the touch screen assembly out, there was also signs of high heat.

I am not going to waste anymore time or big bucks on my old 8 year Dremel 3D40, even the bearings on all the X Y Z rails are worn out! It was a great work horse! But is is time to REPLACE it!!

I started out with a Sidewinder XT. Was really happy with it at first but tired of replacing parts now. Got a Prusa for smaller parts because they are known to be pretty reliable and print well. I'm chasing down ringing issues but mostly happy. Doesn't have the touch screen and 32 bit boards like a lot of the chinese printers have but it has name brand, quality components.

The fan motor is gone as well! This Dremel 3D40 has served me well! I checked my warranty card, and this printer is a little over 9 years old! I have never had one single problem with it until yesterday!! Not sure what exactly happened, but tomorrow I am going to tear it down to see what else may have failed! I dare say this printer has run four days out of the week since I have had it! Thousands of hours for sure!

Right now I think I will replace it with the new upgraded 3D40 Flex! It's running about $1400.00 from Amazon! As I have stated before I run only PLA, and have no desire to use anything else!

Alot of people I know have bought the Ender 5 Plus off Amazon for $600. A few people who post here, also use it. As it has a larger build area of 350x350x400mm

I’d say 9 years of constant use is a good run for that machine. It will be interesting to see what else you discover when you take it apart. Were there any sign that the head got bound up some how? After seeing the ribbon cable roasted, I wonder from the constant flexing of it maybe created a break or short circuit? Any way, I’ll wait to hear your final damage report.

Hi Nick,

I will try to find some time today to tear into it for sure! I will certainly post up what I find with some photos! I am sure glad I was close at hand to catch the fire!!! Kind of scary for sure!

I appreciate the information, and the link up! I looked at the new Creality 3D machines as well as the Ender line up! Still leaning to another Dremel!! Research time I guess!

Update on my 9 year OLD Dremel 3D40 3D Printer!



I stripped out all the motors, and anything else that may be of use! The old cabinet is in the recycle!

I did purchase another Dremel after considerable research! It's there new Dremel 3D40 Flex Digilab printer! It is PLA ONLY, and that has always been my preference! It does come with some upgrades in software and the flex plates for easy print removal! I am looking forward to it.

I am going to second the gecko tech product. I use it on both of my Dremel printers, and rarely have bed adhesion issues

My new Dremel 3D40 Flex 3D printer is hard at work on my Type XXl U-2540 boat!


This printer has a new flexible magnetic plate which is great for removing prints! It also has a new nine point auto leveling system! I am very impressed with this printer! I guess the only draw back for a lot of people, it only prints PLA! This is no problem at all for me! I need to add Dremel now has a better quality line of filament and it is a larger roll! I really like the quality results!

It's ready for the new Japanese 1400 boat!! We will see!!

Between the magnetic / flexible build plate and the GeckoTek build surface, they work to impart a surface finish that I have yet to see from any FDM 3D printer at any price surpass. Here's an example of the obsidian, mirror-like finish obtainable with the GeckoTek as the base on a 1" part. This combination is used to create press-fit, virtually seam-free printed parts.
