Jake will have a hard time with you, nothing better as turning the blade, did he have a backup system to blow in chase of emergency or just only SAS?
As for my last experience with the little Kilo, burned up two rudder servos, this happened before driving, allways have a habit to test the boat on the shore and once launched in the water, if there is something not right i allways abort the drive, no tinkering at the shore but inside the cave.
Found out why those servos burned, it's a tight fitt inside the SD, the servohorn was slightly rubbing against the inside wall of the SD, not every time this happened, so i made the horn shorter to prefent that, she is still on the list of maidening.
Also had a go with the V60, she will be trimmed out lower under water, due to the shape of the hull she wants to rise, have to change the rudder steering, it's not running smooth enough, have a idea how to solve that, i'll report back when my solution works.

To be fair, Jake is very conscientious about doing the pre-mission checks. That coupled with his caution on that 'first dive of the day' -- where the boat is dived not far from shore and care is taken to note the bearing and distance from the Driver during that maneuver -- did insure (once both he and me were at the site-of-the-crime on recovery day) a very quick retrieval of his sunken AKULA.

Yeah, those little cheapy mini-servos will go sour unless you talk nice to them and give them treats. Yup! Things are tight in that little 2" SD.

So there's three backup systems when you include ballasting light. The others are SAS, and the emergency blow bottle...which we haven't been using and it's screwed up over twice on this model. So the sub went into Failsafe, so all planes went to rise, propulsion stops, and the scavenging air of the pumps cuts on. We test in shallow water about 3', and I was running a course about 25' long in front of me. I verified it would float, then I increased the range testing out to about 50' that day. Now I brought it in and did submerging checks immediately in front. So I ran it back and forth about 3 times and it wouldn't fully submerge, so I incrementally increased the dive on the stern planes. At the end of the run I needed to turn and bring it back for another run and right as it was turning heading out to the lake it power-dived. Stabilization should have caught it, but didn't and it took about a 35 deg down angle. I got bearings of right where it was and did back emergency, planes to rise, etc, and the girl on the radio that tells you you're screwed told me there's no signal. So I wait fully expecting it to come up. I sank like a brick. When we later put it into the bathtub the following Wednesday, when we submerged it, it was positively buoyant with about 1/2" out of the water. The water temp was about the same, no thermocline in the lake...no explanation. It just gave us the finger. Now the lesson-learned about the pump motors was that I had previously tested the WTC in the bathtub and identified the pumps. Took it to Dave for 2nd check and he tested them and got the same results on the benchtop. There was suction and there was pressure coming out of where it should be...When we got it back from the lake the blow servo was dead, so he replaced it. When we tested the WTC you could immediately hear the pumps running 4-5 times more. Since they are both wired together, that failing servo sucked the power in that bus and kept the pumps from running as they should have. Added a bit more foam, and that's that.

Someone had asked me about stuff in the lake. I found a small stump and Dave found a sunken racing boat. Other than that there was nothing that grabbed the sub.

Yup those boats sometimes have a will of their own, that sudden dive i also had in the past, in my chase there was a problem with the ADF, sometimes it went dead due to signal loss on the recieverbus, with also the result no respons on the dive planes at all, dive planes stayed in the last position i had steered them, maybe this will explane your sudden dive.
Restarting the boat solved the problem at that moment, in the end i replaced the ADF, no problems anymore.
Once you have passed the critical depth SAS won't work anymore due to the increased waterpressure, Tom had the same issue with his XXIII in the past.
As for backup systems i mostly have a wired float which will be released when the failsave kicks in, this is only done with the smaller boats, the big one's run on pressured air, they will blow in chase of signal loss or when the waterdetection system is activaded.

How do I get access to this knowledge of the master that knows all about how to sink a Boat?
