I dont think it just bobbed up. There are guys on the bridge. It's pitching up and down in pretty big head on swells. We lost a 637 Class CO off San Francisco in the 70's. They pitched down under the water. CO was not secured. They never found him. The OOD was dangling upside down on the side of the sail from his safety line. As a result the rung ladders were added from the deck to the top of the sail as a shipalt.

Youre absolutely right. Youve got sharp eyes. I just now zoomed in to confirm what youve said. What threw me to the wrong conclusion was the disturbed water around the sub with the absence of a wake. Is it possible that they just came to the surface and then the topside guys just got to their posts as this was shot?

The AKULA is moored. You can see some kind of securing element over her bow.

May be, and the sub being towed slowly, but there's no wake from the tug in the picture. And the sub is headed to the coming waves. So it seems that she is moored to a SPMB (Single Point Mooring Buoy), pitching with the swell.

Kilo from astern. Note exhaust haze coming from top rear of sail.

Guppy from the front quarter. Look at that old battleship next to it. Looks like a Kongo. I wonder where this sub is?

The Sub is the USS Becuna and the ship behind is the Olympia, Comodore Dewey's Flagship. They are both in Philidelphia at The Independence Seaport Museum

Kilo torpedo loadout. I wonder if these torpedos are wire guided as I dont see the canister on the tail end. Perhaps its added later.
