Thanks Von Hilde, I can understand that, but, it then makes for a wider sail with increased water resistance doesn't it? Though now I suppose it doesn't matter as traditional scopes will give way to electronic masts with 360 degree view and the control room having no scopes blocking the way but a monitor station for the Captain and/or OotW to switch views as required. Modern electronics and optics. Magic eh?

we dont use opticle scopes much anymore mostly cameras and FLIR as well as satalite communication antenna. No more opticle fixes on targets required, Actually there is no need for a sail so to speek. They basicly are a fixture for the planes now. I see in he future, the conventional cigar shape hulls will change to a more stealth configuration like the aircraft and surface warships. The future of warcraft is quickly changing to remote viehicles and I believe the future subs will get smaller, and more stealthy and less operators. The mission of the submarine has already completely changed since its inseption as a commerce raider in WW I as a hig speed surface patrol boat with the capability to hide underwater when nessissary. Now that there is no need for a gloabily mobile missile launcher as a deterrant, since the advent of the Starwars systems where missiles and or lasar weapons are deployed from above. They are focusing on special warfare capabilities as delivery of special operators now. More likley to go back to the smaller viehicle with speed and stealth with composit construction instead of steel

What is the pipe sticking out of the back? Looks like the exhaust for a 70 HP Westerbeke Aux Diesel Engine.

Thats either the tail gunners 40mm cannon or the clean out from the heads. could be for countermeasure deployment

shhhhhhh!!! dont say things like that, the tow cable may get fouled in the big bronze shiney thingie that spins around back there. Countermeasure deployment maybe for homing torpedos

Actually it's the SHORT-TAS Towed Passive Sonar on Australian Collin class.

Imagine if it were a fixed snort induction tube...
