Ive seen this many times before on a boat, at the rear of the hull or sponson. As the object moves thru the water, there is a momentary void where the water has been pushed out of the way for just a second. The water of course quickly fills in the void, but not before you have seen it. When the scope is just below the surface of the water, this void forms behind it and gets bigger and bigger the faster you go. Ive seen it up to about 1&1/2" long. However, as you go deeper it shrinks then disappears. I theorize that the increase in the weight of the water above it will prevent it from forming with an increase in depth. Im sorry! Im so easily entertained. Im sure I will lie awake tonight just thinking about it.In these two poor photographs you can see it forming right behind the masts at the top.
FYI it's not Cavitation. It's called Interfacial Aeration or Air Entrainment. A bubble of air becomes entrapped within the turbulent flow between the air-water boundary parallel to the flow.
Make it simple, make strong, make it work!

I don't remember seeing the sub other then 1 second of the sail and then the rest of the movie the scope and snorkel. Looked like a Type XXI scope and snorkel.
Very good movie with lots of Cold War tension. The end was great, but only if you remembered the one line stated in the beginning about the Russian subs nuclear torpedo payload.

I dont think so Redboat, it gets to be too big to be a bubble of air.

I love that movie. Richard Widmark at his best. Also find and watch Hell and High Water -- in that one Widmark plays a sub skipper. I wish we had a President today who had the balls and follow-through depicted by the typical character Richard Widmark would play. These are not times for a Community Organizing College Professor!

My Mom loves Robert Mitchum. So last night we watched the "Enemy Below". Pretty interesting view of a Destroyer Escorts difficulty in hunting a U- Boat.

In the linked article, go down to "spillways". There it describes this phenomena as "Flow Separation".http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavitation

Im going to move the sail planes control from the left stick up and down over to the upper right rotary control that I use for the starboard propellor on twin prop boats. Also the SAS blower off of the left stick left to right up to the toggle switch on the upper left of the Polk radio. Thatll keep me from accidentally moving the sail planes while Im trying to submerge. Also having both methods of blowing ballast on the same control makes things more difficult for me. Where does one stop and the other begin. You cant hit the gas without hitting the SAS as well. Not necesarily a suggestion for anybody, just something for me.

I can speak for the Germans having been related to them. There is a "high" German spoken by Northern Germany and a Southern (Bavarian) dialect. So in their own way, Yes!

People in Tokyo look down on the folks from the south, as they have a funny accent.

I like using the phrase "bochi bochi den na",
first most japanese assume westerners dont speak japanese
Second, this is a kansai expression which means "so so", not many people outside japan have ever heard it, let alone say it
So throw that in after speaking in English and watch the meeting dynamics change. No longer are they all talking to each other in Japanese, but they are also trying to figure out what they already said assuming that i didnt understand them. My japanese is actually rubbish, and missed most of what they said already but now ive got em nervous ;)

Next time someone points out it takes 42 muscles to frown, point out it will only take 4 muscles to b1tch slap them if they tell you how mnay muscles you need to smile:pop
