Project type XXI scale 1/96

[MFR1964]

Did some research on this boat first before i can start cutting away, got me a nice pdf of this type of boat from Rossler





These are the items David has send me, she's not that big, but hey!!, it's a type XXI, and at this scale i can sharpen my skills







Drilled some floodholes into the rearpart, and did a dryfitt with the shafts.



Made the effort of changing all the rods to metric, much easier to play around with them.

David has chosen the kiss way of steering the divingplanes and rudder, i want to try to hide them from sight, if that fails i can always go back to the way David did.
First i will build the components i need to make this happen, and do some testing if it's worth the effort, to be contunued.

Hiding away the steeringrods has been more work than expected, pictures


This was a scary cut, since i have only one rearpart, it was needed to make room for my contraption.



All basic components to hide the steering of the diveplanes







All components together, more than enough play on the divingplanes



Roughly oversized prior for making it fit.



Next scary thing, for steering the rudder i had to hog out the rearpart very carefully, so that i could place a grooved pully and a small o ring.



Here you can see the o ring from the inside.



This piece i made to get the o ring under tension, enough to get the rudder moving.



The trick is, by using just enough tension on the o ring, you can turn the rudder, for now it is fastened with some superglue and bakingsoda, i hope the micro servo can handle the force needed to move the rudder, if not i have to find another solution.



The contraption with the divingplanes is made to fit the opening and will be glued tight with some 2K glue to fill in the openings



Here you can see the steeringrods to make things happen, it's tight, but that was expected.
For servicing the rearpart i will make a magnetic connection, so if needed the rearpart can be taken from the hull and serviced.

How about using a bevel gear system for the rudder?

Thats too loosely fitting for proper steering. Id use a miniature belt drive,too

Don't make it too complicate, stays the fact if the servo can pull that more force to turn the rudder, we will see in the future

Yup, at this scale they have to move, if possible retract, this will be a adventure on it's one, but where running ahead, all things step by step
