Scott sent me his RenShape 1/96 NOVEMBER sail master. Just got it in todays mail.

I'm demoting it to intermediate-master status. I'll use it to make a quick and dirty intermediate rubber tool from which I'll make a hollow GRP sail production-master. That production master will be used to give form to the internal mast, bridge, and SAS snorkel foundation production-masters. The objective is to produce a more complete and end-user friendly kit.

Here I'm assembling the flask needed to contain the mold making rubber. I should have the tool completed by this time tomorrow.

Getting on with the parting board. This is going to fit along the waterline to split the boat into upper and lower sections.

I love that you're splitting the hull at the waterline, Scott. That move makes determination of topside displacement -- and as a result, the amount of ballast water needed -- easy. All I have to do is weight the sail and upper hull, and that number is the same as the weight of water to size the ballast tank for. Only math is to convert for the specific gravity of the hull and sail material -- and that works out as the specific gravity of GRP is close enough to 1 not to matter. Easy-Peasy.

However I will have to account for lost displacement for that portion of the ballast tank that will be above waterline in surface trim, and plug in a 10-15% fudge-factor when working out the length of the 2.5" SubDriver ballast tank.

Brilliant work Scott. Just curious, since you are doing a waterline split, will that reflect the November’s somewhat angled, tail-low stance?

Thanks Men. The answer is yes, Brady; the waterline runs at a slight upward angle toward the stern (relative to the centre line). I had to chock up the rear end when I scribed that line.

The parting board. I usually use a laminated shelf for this; cheap, straight and relatively stable. This time I'm trying a much thinner board with aluminium channel sections glued to the underside to provide strength and stability. Seems OK so far.

Anyone got any photographs showing the rear safety rail? I have quite a few showing the forward one but nothing showing the rear. For that matter I have a few shots of the bows of sopme boats that don't appear to have any rails at all?

To determine the amount of (expensive) mold making rubber I need for the four tools. A stand-in for water.

That's pretty bloody smart. I'm going to steal that one.
