I'm the first to admit I "march to the tune of a different drum". I don't look at this passion of mine as a way to save money. As my primary source of recreation and skill growth I spare no expense. I also don't drink, or spend cash at strip joints so I can budget it. Hey, whatever floats your boat, in my case that's Co2
I break it down into two requirements:
1-Local, every day runs.
2-Long distance Events (Fun Runs and Regattas.) I live for these events and don't wish to be unprepared after driving 1200 miles.
I purchased the Milwaukee Packout System after seeing Vaughn Schmitt use his. I had to have it.
Works as a Field Kit, Regatta kit, Boat Launcher and Hauler
.
I will usually just need that top section when I run locally.
The bottom is for major events where I bring everything but the kitchen sink.
As you can see it packs neatly in my F-150!
NOW, your needs will be different, David's (HWMNBN) needs are different, Bob's needs are different, EVERYONE'S NEEDS ARE DIFFERENT!
Choose accordingly.
You can go with a very inexpensive tackle box as most do and works quite well, that does not fit MY needs.
So to all the eye rollers regarding cost, this is not a requirement, just an indication of the possibilies.
Your original question regarded tools.
I keep a check list on the back of my laminated "Rig for Dive Checklist"
This is the minimum I bring stepping out of the home.
For the record, this checklist,. and the aforementioned "Rig for Dive Checklist" was derived from all of David's (HWMNBN) various Kit Instructions and posts.
Here is the list in text form

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.Comment

How about Zipties or wire?

The box itself does not need to be very fancy. I've been using my Plano plastic pistol range box for about 28 years. Has compartments for the little stuff and plenty of room in the bottom for the larger things, including spare cans of Propel and strips of automotive wheel weights and 1/2"x1/2"x12" closed cell trimming foam. The CA bottles go in the bottom, too. The lid has a locking inner lid that keeps you from dumping stuff when you flip it for opening/closing. Start out with something at reasonable cost and with small hand tools. As time goes on, you'll acquire those things you need here and there.
Many of the tools and materials I've collected go unused for 98% of the time. My Submarine Auxiliaryman Fix-the-boat (1:1 scale) tools nowadays only get broken out to fix the lawn tractor! But, I pretty much know where ALL of my tools are, with many of the most used either in or near my rc boat field box.
You won't be using zip-ties or wire unless you're gutting and overhauling your boat, and that's best done at home on the workbench. There are too many itty-bitty screws and such to be doing so at the beach. David can do stuff like that, but we mortals usually only cause ourselves more pain and sorrow when we try.
Take care,
