    Inherited Sturgeon Class

So Ive been on an adventure in RC submarines. My first actually. And a friend of mine invited me over here to share my story and my continuing adventures.

My pal at the local hobby shop, received a single car garage full of hobby supplies when a close friend of his passed away. Flash forward two years, and my Friend makes a gift of an old Submarine from Bills inventory, to me. His conditions? You must take care of it, repair it, and use it.

So the guy who only started flying a year ago. Who owns two planes, one RC sail boat, and RC car from the late 80s and an RC tank that shoots bbs, ya that guy, gets a submarine.

And the quest for knowledge and assistance begins. I thought it was a Los Angles class, 688i. I was quickly set straight. It is a Sturgeon class. A model made by Mat Thor somewhere between 1991 and 1998. It has an older style Gas system in it, with older style electronics complete with a first gen Sub-Saver. The outside was brush painted with what appears to be laytex enamal house paint, with a house sized brush. Screws are set into the hull from the outside, holding bulkheads in place inside. There are no markings nor detail of any kind safe the camo job on the periscope mast.

And thats how I got her.

The next five weeks proved to be an amazing adventure as I discovered what the sub was, who made it, and how it worked. Then the best part, was that I fell into this amazing community of RC Submariners. That has been probably the single greatest internet experience of my life online. But more about that later.

Here are some pics of the sub when I got her.

Good sized boat, Ronin055! Very cool acquisition!!

She's a little "rough" but should clean up to be a real looker!

Stay on the radar screen with your refit!! Would like to see her as you progress!!

    Best of luck with her!!

Ronin055, Welcome! You might think about getting her operational first, and then worry about aesthetics later. She looks small enough(appearances can be deceiving) to put her in the bathtub or a small kiddie pool first , to get the feel of her and make any repairs or adjustments. Ask any questions that you have here, and we will try to walk you thru it.

Well, Ive actually come pretty far. Ive been over on RC groups, then I came over here and it took a little bit to get approved and get moving on this forum.

But Still Ive got some ways to go Im sure. And So I figured Id come here, talk about the road I went down, and see if I can collect some advice along the way to get things from a different perspective.

So, my next step when I got it was to strip the sub down mechanically and see what worked and what didn't. I hooked in a 2.4 Ghz system and tested the electronics for functionality. Everything seemed to work just fine. So I took the WTC into the bathroom and did a submerge test. Unfortunately I got bubbles. Shortly I was able to get the necessary equiopment and seal the WTC correctly. Oil, Grease, and silicone was all it took. The next submersion went pretty smooth. No bubbles. Also we were able to get a radio system for the sub.

The following vid shows our first operational testing of the WTC. We did not have a propel adapter yet to fill the gas reservoir. So all we could really do was dive the WTC and watch for bubbles.

Good. The radio system that you got, I hope it wasnt 2.4 GHZ as that system will surly disappoint. You need a 75MHZ.
I dont know If you have this or not but here is a link to most of the stuff that you will need for Submarining.

If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

                Interesting clear motor end cap.
                Do you know its manufacture?

welcome - nice boat there. You are going to need a 75Mhz radio as Mark pointed out. 2.4GHZ won't penetrate the water.

HEY !! Thanks for the welcome guys !

Ya, the 2.4ghz system was only for initial testing. Digging around at my friends shop, we were able to turn up a radio system that would work. I had to tear appart the electronics suite and cut out some of the original bay housing, but I was satisfied with the results and able to get it all together.

As to the clear end cap, Ya I have no idea where that came from.

Once I got everything mostly functional, the hunt was on for a Propel adapter so I could fill the gas chamber. There was a small battle with that. I ordered on online but the vendor was out of parts to manufacture it. So there was going to be a two week wait. I ended up getting one from a friend much sooner than that.

In the mean time, while this drama ensued, I got restless and stripped the hull. I mean I didn't start out to strip the hull. I actually was just trying to take some paint out of the swamped detailing on the hull. Then I had some 400 grit wet dry, and I was wet sanding in the kitchen sink, when, well I went through the paint. So I started chipping away with my finger nail. Then I discovered that the nylon "pampered chef" pot scraper that my wife has, could scrape off paint, without marking the surface of the sub. Awesome !! SO ya, that ended up with the sub being totally stripped down over a two or three day period. Thats when I discovered all the super cool detailing on my Thor Design hull.

Some primer and some paint later, and the hull was looking pretty good.

                      Very nice scribed-in details!

Can't imagine what was up with the latex paint job!??
                      Unnecessary carnage!! Hah!!

Watching with great interest! Keep 'er going!!

Ya the Laytex kinda burried the whole thing. I did find out though that a ThorDesign hull will stand up to Oven cleaner for paint removal. No problem at all.

Well I recieved the Propel can adapter no worries, and was able to try the sub out in the tub with full function for dive and rise.

My son was at the controls once more as we tested her out.

So I went to the marina today and conducted first time sea trials with the Sea Devil.

All seemed well enough. I was really nervous and didnt really want to dive it flat out. So as a result, the aft end hung a little high until I calmed down and fully vented the ballast.

But then one safty or another kicked in full bore and blew 100% of my gas. It corked to the surface and all ballast controls were frozen. Literally. I took it out of the water and there was ice on the controls. SO ya, that restricter is going in the line asap. But I didnt want to wait for that mod to get her in the water. Now though Ive got to figure out what safty blew. I think I'm going to remove the Sub-Safe since I have the fail-safe inline with the receiver. I kinda think the sub safe blew, because the ballast control stuck on full blow, even after I de-iced the controls. And I couldnt get the dive function to work at all. It was like the servo locked out. But then when I got it home, everything functioned perfectly normal on the kitchen table.

Oh well, here is the vid.
