(your photo of that SSBN in dry-dock provided the dope I needed for Moebius to get the SKIPJACK MSW gratings right -- thanks for that)
The over-strikes (engraved lines extending past the engraved items corners) is a consequence of dragging the scratch-awl with an even pressure into and slightly past the items corner -- if I endeavored to stop the engraving process at the corner I would slightly vary the speed, pressure and angle on the tool, producing a non-uniform depth and width of cut. Better to drag on past the corner, and fill the over-strikes with putter later than to wind up with and engraved item of varied width and depth.
Anyway, since almost all engraved items featured a tight radius at the corners -- not a tight right-angle intersection -- I had to come back with a radius scribe and engrave each corner again anyway.
