    A day in The Cave

I spent the day with His Eminence in the Cave on Monday. He's turned soft on us and got himself another kitty. It's called Mr. Cat II .

Cute lil' fellow. But I fear he's soon going to be trained as a killer watchdog.

Here he is working on sorting out all my screw-ups on my M1. It took the best part of the day, but we had a good chat.

I left with David my first pull on my 1:72 scale Surcouf, and he was impressed with the model. I'm sending him plans and he's going to make the Fittings for it, guns and all! You are going to like this GRP hull, it's B I G!!!

I also showed him my trial pulls on the Alan Poole X Craft model. Again, he was impressed with the detail and clean cut of of the lines.

Soon to come out of The Cave

Tie-dye shirt, kittens, next he will be wearing Birkenstocks and hugging trees. What is next? Becoming a liberal? I think they are calling for snow in H-E-double toothpicks.

The new kits look great! The Kairu and Foxtrot are on my bucket list now.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Or wearing Crocks and smoking weed, that M1 looks more like a foamy to me, newer knew you can stuff that much foam inside.

Ah! Well! Um! That foam is a result of me making a keel from lead shot and epoxy. Not having the faintest idea how much ballast would be needed, I made the entire keel of this stuff - in a special mold.

Unfortunately, I made it too heavy, hence the foam. BUT HWSNBN put a slightly longer Sub-driver in, from a GATO, whereas my was 3" shorter. He thinks that should help the buoyancy.

My next job is to put it in the pool and trim it, and I am hoping I shall be taking out quite a bit of that foam.

Hmm, leadshot and epoxy, that's one way to create a monster if you got too much weight, i always prefer flat lead untill i know the exact weight needed, if needed i'll melt some solid blocks for permanent use.

I'll hope the trick with a longer SD will work, that M1 is not often seen at the pond, me like strange models.

Well! I certainly did create a problem. I've been drilling and grinding on that keel for ages. Won't do THAT again in a hurry. What's annoying is I have loads of lead sheet at work. We use it for chrome plating as anodes.

The article said "The fiery yet friendly, opinionated and self-deprecating Merriman builds models for a living."
There are too many things I can say to this, so wisdom says that I should back off and just grin.

And what have we learned from this exercise?

Precisely nothing! We've heard all that crap about you a thousand times before! It's boring now, and you were a prick!
Just get back to work and stop wasting time.

Yeah, that's one of the old Sub-Tech vacuformed hull. I'm assembling it to qualify the new fittings I'm working up for a new Caswell-Merriman kit. Note the phase-3 stern and dorsal rudder.
