    Weathering colors below the waterline on nuclear subs

    I hope this information may be of interest to those of you want to weather a nuclear sub at and below the waterline.

After reviewing some of David Merriman’s weathering techniques / descriptions I did some exploring to see what colors might be seen in bio-fouling on a nuclear sub after 2-3 months at sea. I suspect this info to be accurate but if any nuclear sub veterans want to offer additional clarification or corrections, please do so.

      I have never been able to find photographs of how a sub might look immediately after it is put into dry dock - most likely because the colors change within days due to drying, oxidation, etc.

      Here we go:

      Very interesting photos - thank you for posting. There appears to be a pattern most notably on the stern. Would those be the anechoic tiles? I I am also wondering if the sub had been on the surface for a while causing some of the greener fouling to pale? By any chance do you know where the six month patrol would’ve taken the sub? Great photos.

        There are troves of drydocked submarine pictures with bio-fouling on the hulls available online. In Pearl, we had green growth a foot long ringing the waterline. Once scrubbed off by commercial divers, we gained three knots.

        The region the boat operates in and frequency of cleaning determines the type and amount of growth. Once in drydock, most US boats are a light green/white color when the hull dries and the sun goes to work. Hydro-blasting takes it off prior to painting.

        Russian submarines can get pretty grungy waiting for funding for cleaning. The Brit boats above will also turn a whitish color when the marine growth dries out and smells to high heaven! I would hate to have to blast out the ballast tanks after the extended patrols they make.

        Tennessee in KB Drydock drying out as the basin is pumped out. They had an elevator in theirs! At Bangor we trudged up and down those stairs, often loaded with tools and test equipment.

            Thank you very informative as always. These are very useful intelligence clues too I'm sure that Navy's use also. The USS Guardfish photo, I recognized the yard background as Mare Island NSY, Vallejo California. Apri 1983. Her history shows she was indeed in the Yard for maintenance there that year...

            I wonder how movie audiences would have reacted to seeing USS Permit in those dry dock scenes ("Ryan! Who let you in here?") scenes filmed in SanDiago at their subbase drydock (Hunt for Red October) had filmed the boat 'with the bark on'. lol. I heard cleaning out the Mud tanks and the reactor cooling discharges was the worst. Sea creatures liked the warmer cozy water while riding. Divers cleaning sometimes found surprises living there.

            Personally, I just can't have grungy models, some light crud maybe. LOL
