I beleive the periscopes on the four boats were all slightly different, certainly differences between Holland 1 and Holland 5, the latter I believe got the first one.

Here's an image of Holland 1 periscope base.

        Got it from this website

The Holland No.5 submarine is a remarkable piece of our naval heritage. She was the first submarine to actually be commissioned in the Royal Navy, on the 19th January 1903 at the same time as Holland No.3. The NAS has been involved in recording and researching the wreck since 2008. Discover more here...

Here is a side shot of Holland 5. Unfortunately this boat is now on the sea bed covered in marine growth, so not the greatest for reference. The Rn submarine museum in Gosport may be able to give you some additional reference.

I British gentleman shared his research material about the Holland 1 with me and I got plenty of photos of the current Holland 1 at Gosport. Unfortunately they didn't cover the periscope dome in good detail. But that issue is fixed now due to your help. Thanks for that....

I found another photo that is a riddle to me....

It shows Holland 1 with a restored interior. That's definitely not the current status of the boat and I couldn't find any additional info. So I'm wondering if they tried to restore ist and had to undo all of it again because of preservation purposes. The long time in the salt water didn't do the metal no good.

It was like that when I visited the Gosport museum about fifteen years ago.

A lot of the corrosion happened after it was removed from the sea bed, as the boat was kept outside. After a few years it became evident the boat was at risk of dissolving into rust unless something was done, and subsequently the boat was encased in a sealed pod and treated to remove all salts out of the steel. It stayed that way for several years before it was removed and located in a custom built building with humidity carefully controlled.

The Hollands were built from a higher grade of steel than other vessels of the day called s-grade. This may be a factor in their longevity on the sea bed.

I added the support structure for the periscope actuator and in the back the hand wheel to drive the rear dive planes....

After the depth control I'm working on the rudder controls. The Holland could bee steered from three positions: deck, conning tower and a seated position under the periscope. Every position had it' own steering wheel, and all those wheels were connected via a central gear box to the drive train to the stern....the central position under the conning tower with the gear box is almost done.

I am learning a lot from your 3D designs. I do wish you would work with Bob and allow us to purchase a set of stl from you. Even with the caveat that the ability to print cannot be guaranteed. Thank you for documenting your efforts.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

                          Thanks!!!

Progress on the rudder controls: on the left of the central wheel is the gear that connects the controls to the drive shaft that runs all the way back to the stern where the rotation is translated into rudder tilt.

And with the right gear, that connected the steering position for suberged cruise with th rest of the rudder actuators. Not really fly by wire...
