On the Billy Bauer underway, theres a couple unusual thingies on the forward deck, that I havent seen before. It says while undergoing tests by the Fedral Navy. Most likely acustic snoopers of somesort. They sure arn't on her now. -
Yes, I think that you are right VonHilde, that little clasp and those tiny hinges would never stand up to combat conditions. I hadnt noticed until you spotted it.Leave a comment:

Interesting detail of the hinged access doors built into the limber holes under the prop shafts on 995. I would normally presume, that was a standard aplication on the type VIIs and not a modification on that particular boat. I wondered what was in there that had to have a hinged door, which suggests schedualed usage, but underwater hinges would have some carrosive issues, to say the least. Could be they were installed in her post war period, or even have something to do with the display period, which seems more likely. They did alot of "Cobbing together parts" on that boat, when they set up the display, with the keel stand, and the doors thru the hull, and securing the hull to the ground to make it stable.Last edited by Von Hilde; 12-13-2012, 09:49 AM.Leave a comment:

Is that a modified Combat models hull? It sure looks like on with no skag on the aft keel, to mount the rear dive planes. Mine came like that, so I cut the entire aft section off and fabricated one, and added a couple sections to make it close to the right liength for a 1/72 IXD2. I put the gears and bell crank, for the dive plane shaft in there as well. I used a piece of 1/4" aluminium channel for the main keel, to give striength and ridigity and attached a small piece of 1/4" flat aluminium strap to the top of the channel to extend thru the hull.Last edited by Von Hilde; 11-20-2012, 05:28 AM.Leave a comment:

Gantu,
Please tell me you will make a run of these for sale! This is what I wish Revell would do. Make different versions - Type IX, XXI, Mare Island Balao, (insert your favorite here), etc., and if I could be even more selfish, all in 1/72 scale (I just love this scale since I was a kid).
Peace,
TomLeave a comment:
