David, that cutter stile thingy was used to split the waves when running at high speed at the surface, just like my model there is a tendency to dive nosedown when the waves went to far over the bow.
They solved this by placing a wave cutter, which allows bigger speeds at the surface, that seat seems to be placed too low, my initial thought is, that the observer could stand on it, and the view would certainly be interesting.

Good German engineering dictates two-valve protection (dome and trunk hatch) of the main spaces within. There appears to be a contoured seat where the 'observer' would plant his fanny when, ah, observing.

Man! What a view! I would have killed to get that gig. But that location is just asking for a dead-head or the like to take out the Perspex dome. Hence, the trunk hatch. Maybe that's why they went for the cutter style stem in the superstructure seen in some shots of the V80. Good stuff, Manfred!

I always wanted to look through a raised scope on the ascent to periscope depth, but the conn gets to be a busy place when getting within keel range of overhead traffic, so it never happened. Actual eye-ball observation from a combatant submarine through a submerged periscope head remains (until the Optronic type masts, anyway) the preview of ship control and intell guys doing scary things in the dark.

    David,

As far as i've seen on the pictures it's a observation dome, they used it to see how this boat would act hydrodynamicly.

As you can see there is a dotted line on this drawing, meaning to me that it's part of the pressure hull, and that it would give access even when underwater.

Was the clear hemisphere pressure-proof or just a surface running spray-shield?

These are the last pictures concerning the V80, i'll dug inside my archive to get some more pics about other Uboats.
