VIIAs with external rear torpedo tubes They didnt have a rear tube between the rudders like the VIIB and later series. The thing on the bow ahead of the tube doors is an early sonar transdeucer, The boat thats getting welded on, has had it removed and the hole covered. Most likely for an upgrade of the new system, you can barely see a few of the new style transdeucer discs above the dive planes. KHB (kristalldrehbasisgerat)

That thingy on the bow was called a S-gerat, a primitive forerunner for a listeningdevice, they later changed it over to both sides near the front divingplanes, giving a better angle to hear.

U31 and U32. What are those? External tubes on the upper stern?

The more I look at the second one, it looks like it got bumped and dimpled by an impact.

Whats up with the bows in these two pictures? One has a weird bulge in the center of the bow and the other has what appears to be a guard over the same area.

Interesting pic of u 123 in the yard at lorient, the rear torpedo doors have limber holes. I havent seen them on any other type IXs. The rendering of the u571 movie poster is pritty cool. I think the foto needs to be flipped tho, since the anchor is suppose to be on the starbord side.
