Oh! Sugar! REAL submarines, with guns blazing, burning hulks sinking, grubby unshaven men running the boats, Donitz in the shots too! I LOVE it!

Not like these new floating hotels of today!

    More! More!

I liked the movies today. Ill have to look at them a few times to get some intel, but I saw a few boats that need researching, like the unusual tower that appears to be an experimental application of a type XXI tower on a type IX. It is a type UA (export boat) most likely the Batiray, a boat built i Kiel for the Turkish navy before the war, but delivery was canceled due to the wars begining, and was put in service by the Germans. The deck gun was installed in the tower, forward of the bridge. 14 of these were built for export. The Turks had a few that were built in Turkey by German engineers, but when the war started the German engineers were called back to Germany to help with the home front. The construction dragged on untill completed by Turkish engineers 1946. The pic of Truman leaving the U2513 was here in Key West. Trumans "Little White House" was about a 5 min walk from that pier. The boat was undergoing T&E at the time. It was used for a target during an early ASROC test later in the early 60s, after serving the USN for several years untill maintainance cost took it out of commission. U 2008 was here as well, during that time. It is on the bottom too. Click image for larger version

The French site is great. It cleared up a few things about the type IIs. I dont know if your aware, that several were somewhat dissassembled and transported to the Black sea via bardge, thru the Danube river, and then overland to Istanbul. The cammoflage that has the graded stripes on the tower was on several of them in that area of operation. U18 being one of them. Moat were scuttled at the end of the war. I recall the Turkish Navy, (TJB) aquired one, and still had one in commission, as well as a Coal burning German built Battleship ( Yauz ) in 1961 when I was living in Istanbul. There are a couple of the scuttled ones still on the bottom in the Black Sea, that had been recently discovered by Turkish divers, in about 60 ft of water. I wonder if there are any plans to raise one, since they arn't considered war graves.

Here are a few that I dug out and some that I blew up and highlighted. I apologize if some of these have already been posted. Its kind of hard to keep up with all of that. If I post everyday to this I can probably post for a month and a half. However they wont all be WW2 stuff.

That means I can forget all the missing rivetts caused by sanding and erase (or at least minimize) them all? Cause it gives worst visual effect having scattered rivetts around the hull.
This can be considered the dumb ass question of the day.

About ten minuits ago, before I logged on today, I was just thinking about how many u boat pictures you had, and wondering when you would run out. After all, there were a limited number of boats ever produced from both wars. Between your collection here and the one over on subsim, just about all the WWIIs have at least one pic. I download them for the individual boats particular details, which I utilise in my paintings and models. I always wondered where the Revell moldmaker got the idea for the prominate rivetts, and todays post, finally gave me the clue. They used the Bletchley Park museum model. Thats the tower in the close up that clearly shows the rivetts. Its a large scale metal boat, that was constructed of metal sheeting rivetted over a wood frame, instead of welded plates like on the actual boats.
