U 117 , boat on the right was a type X milchkow and U66 was a IX, no wake is because they were refueling when caught on the surface by TBFs from the USS Card Aug 7 /43 You can research the event at uboat.net

Interesting. I did a little research and I found the picture below was from a prior incident. The picture shown is the end of U-117 and her crew. Here is a quote from a wikipedia site:

On 1 December 1942, U-117 was assigned to the 12th U-boat Flotilla at Bordeaux. Her fifth and final patrol began on 22 July 1943 from her base in Bordeaux. Her main objective on this patrol was to lay 66 mines off New York City. On 27 July, U-Boat Control directed U-117 to divert from her course to refuel U-66, which was also heading for North America. U-66 was attacked by aircraft on 3 August, before the rendezvous took place, and was in need of medical assistance.[11] U-117 reached U-66 on 6 August and transferred her ship's doctor and other essentials to U-66.
The next day, TBF Avenger aircraft (VC-1 USN) coming from the USS Card attacked the two U-boats on the surface while U-117 was refuelingU-66. The Avengers dropped depth charges near U-117 and U-66. U-117 tried to help U-66 during the attack, but was attacked herself by aFIDO homing torpedo dropped by another Avenger. Two more Avengers and two F4F Wildcats arrived later from the USS Card and forced U-117 to dive and then dropped depth charges. U-117 was hit by one of two FIDO homing torpedoes dropped by the Avengers and sank with the loss of all crew. U-66 was able to escape the Avengers during the attack and make her way back to her home port of Lorient.[12][13]

Thats what it looked like to me too. If you look at the wake left by the Uboats it looks like they are almost stationary. If they were traveling at top speed you would think that the explosion would be much further back.More to come....................dudes

It sure looks like it. The picture below is the after effect. The picture name identifies the sub as the same one. Very interesting!

Those two shots of two Type-9's being attacked by an ASW aircraft: Is the first shot a weapon splash, and the second detonation of the charge?

Todays trivia, U 93s tower Under construction does not have the splash shield installed yet, and you can see the burn marks from the welding of the safety rail on the side of the tower, so the final paint hasent been applied at the time of the pic. About May/ June 1940. Picture to the left is the boat is after October 1940, when it went from a training boat to a front boat. Klaus Korth's Red Devil emblem, is with a net, catching a small frieghter, with Churchill on it. All the other red devil boats, the Running Devil held a torch. Note: Training boats had a yellow strip around the tower, when they were assigned to the training operation. Some people believed the stripes were white, only because the pictures were mostly B&W. Small discrepancy in the U9 pic. (type II with the Knights Cross) The caption states its U 92, Most likely should have been U9-2 denoting the second picture in the series of the boat surfacing

U 35 was a type VII A, known as the "Bad luck boat" before the war. In 1937 it was rammed by a frieghter, then in 1938 it was ran over by the battleship Graf Spee, which is the sevear damage in the pictures. In 1939 it was hit by an airplane. During the war the luck changed and the boat was fairly successfull. It had several kaptans, and it was Otto Kretchmer's first command. Eventually sunk later in the war by 3 destroyers, but the entire crew survived. I think those lines on U 45 were for degausing. The pictures of the "Canooes" being built on their sides are excelant. They are a great help building mine. They have eliminated alot of guesswork as to how the deck was supported.

The picture under that of U 35 seems to be of a sub whose deck received the visit of a propeller

This U boat is the captured U570. It was then named HMS Graph. It was used by the allies for evaluation and then sent out with a British crew on two war patrols. Here are a few pictures of the actual U570/Graph.

The second and third pictures on todays postings seems pretty Dramatic. Looks like a Destroyer or a cargo ships prop sliced up the superstructure and Walloped the conning tower. Whats up with the Ninth picture down. Horizontal and vertical lines on the hull?
