    Russian submarine id

In order to understand all these Russian Submarine names and project numbers, I did some research and wrote down for myself a list of the classes and obtained pictures for all of them. Some of you already know this material but some of you might appreciate my sharing this
info. So over the next couple of weeks I will be updating this and adding new info.

    Whiskey project 613 Medium range
    Zulu project 611 Long Range
    Romeo project 633 Medium range
    Foxtrot project 641 Long range
    Tango project 641B
    Kilo project 877
Lada project 677 (some said to be AIP equipped)
Amur project 950 (for export only)

This short list is of the Diesel powered hunter/killer group in the order that they appeared. Next we will take them one at a time and post pictures and some info. If anyone takes odds with anything posted here please speak up. My info comes from Wikipedia and Norman Polmars book Cold War Submarines.

As the spoils of war the Russians recieved several German Type 21 submarines for research. It was quite a boon for them as they were considered to be further behind in modern technology as far as submarines were concerned. There first submarine to come from this was project 613, known to Nato as Whiskey. Turns out that the end results were disappointing. Its said to be a very poor copy of the type 21.The number of units constructed vary but are generally considered to be 215.Click image for larger version

Notice the prominent sonar dome forward of the sail on the bottom of the hull, quite distinctive. Here is a link for more info:http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...russia/613.htm

Next up is the ZULU. To improve on the Whiskeys performance , some of the lessons learned were incorperated in this design. Since the Whiskey was considered slow, more horsepower was added to get the speed up. It was an improvement in some respects but with it came its own problems.Structural weaknesses and vibration limited its depth and speed. It, like other Russian designs , were exceptionally noisey in part due to having three screws. All told 26 were built.Click image for larger version

Romeo came into play as a continuing adaptation of the Type 21. It was considered medium range and 20 were built for USSR use. Many other nations acquired or built their own. Production was cut back by the Soviets because of shifting emphasis on Nuclear submarines. Try this link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romeo_class_submarineClick image for larger version

Project 641 Foxtrot was next in the evolutionary chain. Probably the best known of the bunch. It was made somewhat famous by their participation in the Cuban Missle Crisis. Their presence was the cause of a great deal of concern to the president. All except one was located and forced to the surface by small nuisiance charges. The other one was able to elude the ASW forces. 58 were used by Russian forces and they were widely used by other nations.Click image for larger version

Excellent stuff, Mark. Most instructive. The FOXTROT shots are particularly timely to me and a few others here.

Next up is Tango, project641B a continuation of the Foxtrot project. It was designed as part of a plan to ambush Carrier battle groups and overwhelm them. 250 were originally ordered but was cut back due to growing popularity with Nuclear submarine construction. The Kilo was designed as a small , more modern submarine with modest performance to be used in coastal areas. As many as 30 have been in use with the Soviet navy. As far as performance is concerned it is considered one of the worlds quietest submarines. However it still doesnt equal the performance achieved years ago by the US Barbel class, the last American mfg. diesel electric submarine class. From the Kilo we get an improved version known as Lada project 677. For the first time since the 1940s the soviets have produced a submarine class using mono hull construction. Compared to the Kilo it is more capable with upgraded systems and a reduction of surface displacement by 1.3 times. It has been marketed as less expensive than other nations designs. There will be a total of 8 produced. Here is a link to more stuff:http://www.irandefence.net/showthread.php?t=42193

The difference externally between the Kilo and the Lada is obvious. The Lada has a upper rudder that the kilo lacks. Also the superstructure is taller on the lada with a deep groove between it and the hull. One more item that I noticed was that the Lada has sail mounted planes and no bow planes.Click image for larger version

Amur, project 950, was designed from the outset , not as a submarine to be used by the Russian Navy but instead for export. Therefore it is less capable and does not have all the bells and whistles. From the outside it appears identical to the Lada. Orders for it are firming up with several onboard. There is a whole lot more on the Amur but I dont have the time to type it all in, so go here:http://www.ckb-rubin.ru/eng/project/submarine/noatompl/

ID:	61438 The other thing that I noticed is that the masts used on the Kilo are recognizable with masts that I have seen on other Russian subs in the past. Starting with the Lada they have new designed masts which look completely new.

On Monday we will begin anew , this time with diesel powered ballistic missle subs as we steadily move thru all the major designs (attack, cruise missle, balistic missle, nuclear and non nuclear) that the USSR had or has in service.
