Soldering directly on the model with a fine hot tip at 450 degr.C was much easier than expected.again, figuring out where those struts go was the bigger effort... the fore, much shorter ones will be dummys from abs rod, glued on the hull.

Replaced the 2mm diameter safety tracks on the bow with 1mm rods to a more realistic measure. Also made the ladder-like gangway on the sail some mm narrower and put it to the right, where it should be instad of along the centerline.

Will flatten everything straight and correct one post's position, but otherwise i like the look. With all those railings, no wonder those boats were the noisiest! Impressive build, but it's such an ugly boat.....even the USS Halibut is beautiful compared to this monster :-)

Agreed. But what a remarkable demonstration of cramming 20 lbs. of stuff into a 10 lbs. vessel. Turning a WISKY into a missile slinger. Russian's are nuts!

Ordered some small parts for little money that i found easier to buy rather to make them. The anchor deemed a bit heavy so i made a copy from resin. More brass rods arrived for the missing relings... changed the props from 3 to 5 blades. Did not find a proper 6-blader...

Some more pictures of the fwd deck and the construction of the anchor winch. I used the hex-nut on the holding bolt as orientation for the 6 cuts. Soldering the small brass-wire inserts proved to be difficult and i have to remove quite som excess solder. Tried sweating them on, what did not work out at all as the brass boday was way to massy to take the heat, so soldered one after another what took ages Afterall, am happy with the result. That should have been the last complicated part of the deck details, safe the masts that will come later. Next "big" thing to do is marking and opening up the lower floodholes. The diesel exhausts are in the wrong place and need detailing, too.

David M., acid arrived today. Once again, i cleanup my soldering spots, wipe with steel wool, degrease and apply acid until i see sufficiant oxidation, rinse with water and dry, apply primer straight afterwards, right? I use 42% ferric acid solution, how long should i expose the brass?

                          Jörg

Details of the aft deck. Again, hours of cross-checking pictures for the proper position and 10 minutes working on the hull...
Sidenote, i am building the model as the S-142/pennant No. 570 as below. That boat was build as Project 665 from the keel instead of being a modified 613' Whiskey.
There were numerous differences and changes on the class over time, so safety tracks, hatches, floodholes etc. are not uniform between the submarines.

New tool arrived! Since my old Dremel did not survive minor woodwork(again!) I decided for the small brother of my superb Proxxon industral grinder that i rather use stationary. Holdable like a pen at 270 gramms, its great! I now have my old dental technician's micromotor for 2,35mm shaft bits and the new Proxxon for 3,2mm bits around for quick switching between the tools!

Started detailing of the sterward sailsection housing the rear doors of the missile tubes. Flaps and hatches and more of them... when finished, all the outlines will be scribed.this is just the first step needing a lot more work and some corrections. The semilunar mark will be cutout completely and receive a (non-funcional) hinge.
