Just received the notice on the torpedo firing system. I haven't started my Gato yet but I thought I would start a discussion. There is a modeler on the RCGroups Gato build that has done a great job on articulating the shutters. If the David Merriman torpedo system will work with the articulated doors it will be a spectacular addition to the model. If anyone is going to implement the torpedo system please add your ideas to the discussion. When I start mine I will be adding the torpedo launch system. It seems it would be a good idea to get some of the mechanics in while the nose section is still off the model.

Hi. I was wondering if there would still be a way of launching torpedoes off a boat that only uses a 4 channel radio?Make it simple, make strong, make it work!Comment

Whew, that's better. Now that I have control of myself.
Look: if you can't afford an r/c system with more than four channels to it, you got no business buying a torpedo system.
Period.
You buy a very expensive car. You going to fuel it with Regular and oil it with salad dressing just to save a few bucks?! Come on!
WHAT THE HELL'S WRONG WITH YOU CHEAP *******S, ANYWAY!?....

Four Channel Radio
Might I suggest a Robbe F-14. That is what I will use. They have enough bells, whistles, switches and goodies that you could flush the head if you desired to install one. It is dual throttle stick which I plan on using since I am going to drive each motor separately. It's a 75MHZ radio so it will be suitable for submarines. Harbor Models (sorry) had a special on the basic unit which has a 7 channel rx.
I have no commercial interest in the above but it makes a great marine radio.Last edited by ir3aus; 03-27-2010, 11:47 AM.There is a fine line between hobbies and mental illness!Comment

Now, that is a fine r/c system -- you buy the 'basic' r/c system and then add on the modules to the transmitter and receiver to expand the systems capabilities to the degree that suites your need. You can add both proportional and latched/momentary switch functions at will.
Mike: Ir3aus brings up a good point. That Futaba r/c system, the F-14, is something we should look into carrying. I've used those things and they are bullet-proof as far as set-up is concerned -- though by today's standard, the receiver is a bit too bulky for us. I'm confident, however, by substituting the Sombra Lab's receiver, things can be made to fit the SD's from 2.5" up.
Andy: Kick in here with your thoughts, please.
Kevin: You too.

David,
Is the torpedo firing system available for purchase yet. I do not see anything being offered as of yet by Caswell or D & E. Can we join the two halves of the bow section and do all the work indicated in CD 1 and then be able to install the torpedo stuff.

The forward and after torpedo tube installations for both the 1/72 Revell GATO and Type-7 can be performed with the entire hull sections assembled, so go ahead with your work, and when the torpedo launcher fittings kits become available, you'll be able to drop the tubes in there without the need to tear anything up.
