Using tooth-paste as a masking agent to achieve the look of mottled bleaching below the waterline:

First task was to take my ready-made 1/96 SKIPJACK mask cutting stencils and use them to cut out some masking tape needed to protect the deck area. This was backed up with paper towels and more masking tape. Now I can lay down the tooth-paste mask and mist on some white to represent some ragged looking bleaching of the lower hull and all appendages beneath the designed waterline. The upper rudder gets the same treatment.

I take some tooth-past, cut it with water and, wa-la!, I got a brushable masking medium. The sugar based (water-soluble) mask is stippled onto the model surface, left to dry, then a mist of white is laid over the work. Once the white has dried, I wet the surface, the sugar vehicle of the mask melts, and the sticky goo is blotted off the model leaving the mottled look I'm after.

Before removing the masking I laid down a band of white mist and over that, at the demarcation line below the waterline I painted some green to represent 'grass'. The masking was then removed. Tomorrow, when things have dried hard I will use a white pencil, steel wool, some chalk and any other do-dads I can think up to make the scum-line a bit more believable.

          Hi David
progress report to the CABAL please on ASSWIPE.....updates? photos?

Don't make me come over there :)
Hope your weather is warmer. Winter here sucks. Lake temp here whilst never frozen is too dangerous for ops.

This relates to the 1/60 ALBACORE masters I'm working up in that this assembly, of the 1/60 SubTech ALBACORE kit constitutes some practice swings before I commit these techniques to my master.

(and I want an ALBACORE to play with this year at Nauticus).

I'll be working up installation of radio gear into that new 3" SD you sent me over the next coming weeks. It will be bespoke and setup for the GRP ASSWIPE.

Its all about perspective Andy. Australians are use to warmth. Our homes are designed for that. That's why we freeze our butts off in your summer time conditions which we exceed 10 months of the year. That's why we serve beer here cold.

My freshwater lake temperature glues itself year round 4 degrees C below the minimum temperature of the day (usually night time temp). So that is sitting on 6 degrees C now, and the warning signs about cold water dangers are posted around it.

We don't need signs like that in New York. We know the water is too cold when you can walk on it.

Yes it does seem strange in these parts...but very necessary, especially in the blue mountains west of Sydney. Water temps in the ocean are swimmable all year round, in fact beach water temp just last week was balmy 20 degrees C. Freshwater temps however plummet fast. Most people down here see a body of water as a body of water. To them it doesn't make sense that there are such big differences to the beach water temps. Moreover, lots of the "lakes" in Sydney areas are brackish and whilst cold are swimmable, so the pure fresh stuff is a different and potentially dangerous winter animal.

In the home stretch on this thing. I've already trimmed the 1/60 ALBACORE out in the local dive shop pool -- that done while in primer gray. Now, for the 'making pretty' stuff:

ID:	93380 For hull numbers, ships name and draft markings I usually employ the Woodland Scenic line of dry-transfers. However, I did not have a font size large enough for the hull numbers that go on the sail. Nuts! Break out the proportional dividers and masking tape! I lofted the character outlines from the plan and laid them down on the sail with masking tape. Fortunately, 'Gothic' (block) letters and numbers are easy to do (no doubt one reason the navy has such an affinity for the style) this way. So, half a day invested in masking and I was ready for white paint.

ID:	93381 I broke out my nasty old Paasche H-model spray-gun, outfitted it with a #1 tip, and started blasting away with some thinned down water-soluble acrylic white. I first applied a bunch of over-spray protecting masking on the sail. While at it I painted the 'clear' dead-light atop the sail white to make it appear transparent. Looked like hell, I later polished it off for another try later with silver and some black streaking.
