Any water-soluble acrylic -- the Cheap Walmart variety will work.

My Nautilus was completely done with water base acrylics. David walked me through on how to use them not only airbrushing, but using paint brushes and a sponge. (thank you again David)

I thought you used 2k clearcoats, Dave. Or is that a bit too aggressive on enamels?

If it is to be the final 'clear coat', yes, I would go with the two-part automotive system. But, as I read the question, he only wants a chemically stable barrier between the ever-touchy enamel chemistry base coat, and more chemically aggressive topcoats. In that capacity the quick drying, cheap water-soluble acrylic is fine.

To be clear, I want to use Revell Enamel on Type IX after priming. Then apply a clear coat to protect the enamel.

                Proceed.

But for the life of me... I make the assumption that you are married to that god-awful system because those pricks have 'just the right color' you want. Not the hill you want to die on. If that's your means of section: Stupido!

Buy white, black, clear, and the primary colors, a color-wheel and mix your own from a more friendly chemistry. Join us in the 21st-and-a-quarter-century, pal! Don't make me come over there!!!!!

These are the items that David had me get for both my Nautilus and my HL Hunley. With these colors you and with the help of the wheel you can concoct any color you want. Inexpensive water base acrylics and I use an acrylic clear coat.

Yes. A basic need: to preserve, color, and weather. Start a series -- jumping in with the virtues and liabilities of the many paint chemistries out there -- it being a broad, many faceted subject.
