Do either the forward or stern dive planes have more effect on the boat diving?

Stern planes.have the greater effect.
Okay, as we were taught in Subschool...
Stern Planes:
Coarse depth control.
Changes the angle-bubble-pitch of the boat to use propulsion to affect rapid changes of depth. Say changing from 150' to 700' feet and you wish to get there somewhat quicker than a snail's pace. Useful for Torpedo evasion lol!
Poor use at PD can broach the bow or raise the screw out of the water...bad submarine form lol!
Bow/Fairwater planes
Fine depth control.
Used to maintain ordered depth while the stern planes maintain zero bubble.
FWIW, during High speed transit (Full/Flank Bell), Fast boats don't use the F/W's and have the Stern planesman soley maintain depth control, once slowing back to Patrol/silent approach speed, the OOD would transfer Ordered depth control to the Helmsman/Planesman. At least back in my day. Hopefully no Stern Plane jam would occur at speed loll In that case it's rudder hard over/fishtail, full rise on the fairwaters to prevent a 20+ knot boat exceeding Test then Crush depth.
Hope this helps!Last edited by QuarterMaster; 05-16-2024, 05:13 PM.v/r "Sub" Ed

NEVER underestimate the power of a Sailor who served aboard a submarine.
