Alternatives for Dumas Cup style coupler

What would be a good alternative to the Dumas cup style coupler. I can not find a local source and the ones from China meant for RC car either have a 5mm hole for the shaft or a solid shaft.

If you're looking for imperial, it'll be much more difficult to find anything outside the US. Easier to either convert the shafts to metric, or sleeve a larger metric coupling to fit.

Have a lathe? Chuck it up and you can bore a smaller one out to a larger size and go from metric to imperial.

I am happy with these. Shaft couplers from Harbor Models. Attach one end to your WTC, and the other brass connector to the fixed prop shaft aft. adjust the shaft length so you simply slide the brass grooved part into the red grooved plastic coupler when sliding the WTC into place in hull.

You can order from Harbor models specifying different shaft diameters. same size on each - like 4 or 5 mm, or different, a 4 mm on one end and a 5 mm on the other end. They also sell a universal brass grooved connector that's male on each end too.

Harbor models' prices are a bit more. The couplers too. But not too bad. But how many couplers does one need in their lifetime unless you're a manufacturer.

They run smooth and very balanced and quiet operating. (hope you don't mind Bob, the boys on the sub tender parked alongside changed out the dog bone...lol)

They're generally known as Huco couplings here in the UK, after the company that first produced and marketed them, but they're also sold by Raboesch and quite a few cloned versions too.

Okay for lower RPM use, but they are quite bulky so less well suited to some smaller boats. Also being a Hooke's joint they're not a constant velocity design, so will impart more vibration into the assembly unless the joint is very well aligned. Running a pair like your photo helps reduce the effects of that.

That's the coupling R&R supply with some of their kits. I think Ron may get them investment cast, possibly by Simon at Prop Shop.

You could make your own using wheel collets and some sheet stock or wire brazed or soldered on.
