OTW cylinders

How are the o-rings secured in OTW cylinders. Is it flat against the edge of the cylinder and face of the encap or does it sit in a recess?

can one use a rubber mat as a sealing material instead of an o-ring?

Your illustration at the top is closest to reality. The o-rings are trapped and squeezed by the ends of the tubes, along the body section, and the end caps are exactly as you have depicted, but also have a shoulder to squeeze against in the inner diameter, which keeps things centered. It's very tough to do, but you could extrude the o-rings if you got really gorilla-fisted in tightening the thumb screws. Just pay attention to the process and tighten the crews evenly and you'll be golden!

Bear in mind the drawbars/rods are only tapped into acrylic sheet.

Regarding the rods, I'm assuming 3 in an equilateral triangle arrangement would be "the absolute minimum" number to ensure proper compression of the O-ring.
