as i understood it in my VIIc boat book the gap was to force air/water straght up due to wind being pushed up through the vent holes sorta like a air wall..didn't work so well in heavy seas
Unidentified!

I think you will find that the top one was the wind deflector and a wave deflector was fitted halfway down the conning tower.
British boats and ships had a much better and effective system that deflected air up and created an air blanket. Heavy seas would of course negate this on submarines but ships seemed to operate ok with them. It is easier for you all, if interested of course, to view photographs of WW2 RN Sub conning towers and ships rather than me try to describe them.
I amma fraid that the only photos I have of RN subs are onboard museum boats, Holland 1, Alliance and Onyx. When I learn how to add pictures I will post some of them.Comment

Oh thats easy. Heres a step by step. Sort of.
First click on the "Reply To Thread" button. When you do that this first screen that I have posted below will pop up. Notice the Icon that I have drawn a squiggly line to? Click on that one. That is for posting pictures. After you click on that, the second screen that I have posted will pop up. Press "Select Files". Up will pop all your pictures on your Hard Drive. Just click on the one you want and hit "open". Then hit "Upload File". Figure out first, how to post pictures and then Ill show you how to enlarge them.

This is a really interesting photo - they have finished repairs and are filling the dock. The stripe in the middle, is that truly a different color or is it different from the cleaning off the growth? If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.Comment
